Hi there friends and fellow family adventurers!
Welcome to This Week’s 3 Things.
This new series, out every Saturday, will share a bit more about myself and my family. Think of it as a “behind the blog” where you can see what life is like when for us when they aren’t spellchecked, edited, and photoshopped for the site.
You’ll also get links and tips from around the web that can help you find adventure, eat healthier, and have fun with your family. Many of these will be answers to reader questions here on the site or on our Facebook page.
If you have a question or tip to share, please share it with us and it could be featured on an upcoming 3 Things.
My 3 Things for the Week
The camping trip that almost wasn’t
Last week, I posed the question “What’s Normal Anyway?” If you missed it, follow the link and you are read it. I talked a little about not going on a planned camping trip because of the threat of rain. Well, I’m really glad we went! The rain came late Saturday night while we were sleeping and didn’t stop our fun at all!
I’ve often been asked how we camp. So I thought I’d share a few pictures from this last camping trip to Chickasaw National Recreational Area in Southern Oklahoma.
We left Friday afternoon after the kids got out of school, got stuck in rush hour traffic, and made it to the campsite as the sun was going down. That sunset made it all worth it! Don’t you think?
Well we got everything up and were using our Grab and Go Camping Menu. So dinner wasn’t too difficult in the dark. The next day, my husband made breakfast and we set off to kayak, paddle board, hike, and visit the Nature Center.
Being a Good Neighbor
We met some great people that camped next to us. They were a homeschooling family from Wisconsin that was on their way back from San Antonio. They were driving home and planned to stop every night to camp with their family. Since my kids started public school this fall, that is one of things I miss, being able t o just get up and go anywhere.
Anything but light
This family’s slim lined camping gear made me feel a little like an overpacker with everything we brought. But in my own defense, I did have a LOT of new gear to try out for future reviews. Watch for a new fall gear guide as well as reviews for ENO, MSR, Therma Rest, Hi Tech, Lodge, and more.
Below you can see what our truck bed looked like for this trip with the Kid-O-Bunk stacking cots, sleeping bags, ice chest, clothes, firewood, drone, kayak paddles, life jackets, and, and, and………. We didn’t pack light for this trip in any way, shape, or form.
On this trip, we pulled out the Coleman stove for meals on Saturday. I was working a new camping recipe for Camping Breakfast Sandwiches with boil in bag omelettes. That blue Stasher Bag works great and because it’s silicone, it’s healthy for you too.
Mountains of Laundry
The only thing I
hate dislike about camping is all the laundry afterwards. I end up washing 5-6 loads of laundry between clothes, towels, sleeping bags, pillows, etc. Plus all the gear we have to rinse off. Molly Suds sent me some laundry powder and wool dryer balls to try out. I like that their are no additives or dyes. It’s earth friendly and safe for delicates like sleeping bags. It removed the smoke and outdoor smell in the first wash. I was impressed!
Make the Most of the Time You Have
I’m just going to put this right here and get a little serious for a minute.
None of us know how much time we have together, so please make the most of it.
Over the past few weeks, my father in law passed away and my mother in law underwent a triple bypass heart surgery. With a family history of heart disease, my husband recently went to see a cardiologist for high blood pressure. After a series of tests, he’s going in next week for an angiogram because there is a problem or as the doctor puts it “things aren’t quite right”.
Years ago we improved our diet and stopped eating processed foods. We opted for a real food diet and cleaner living. This was a punch in the stomach, but we’ll see what happens. My anxiety is at an all time high this week. So please keep us in your thoughts.
