Travel allows us to get away and explore the world around us. As a family, we can reconnect with one another and have fun together. The best thing about travel is you can do it near or far, on any budget, and in any time frame. All you need is a desire to get away and have fun!
Here are 5 Family Travel Resolutions for you and your family:
Travel Doesn’t Have to Be Expensive
Family travel doesn’t have to break the bank. There are plenty of ways to save money on transportation, lodging, food, and entertainment. You just have to look for it. Many state, regional, and local tourism departments offer area information and discounts. Sites like Travelzoo, Southwest Vacations, Tripadvisor, and Groupon can offer great discounts on all things travel related.
If you want to have fun outdoors for less, here’s a list of FREE camping sites. You can select an area and explore the great outdoors.
We all love those places that are familiar and comforting. We love traveling to Disney World. Our family travels there for several reasons. It’s always an easy choice when we can’t agree on a destination. Do you have a place like this? Instead of traveling to that spot, go past your comfort zone and try something different.
This is the year you go someplace you’ve never been before. Take that cruise you’ve talked about, travel somewhere you can practice a foreign language, go somewhere scenic and try a new outdoor activity (snow skiing, spelunking, hiking, kayaking), take in a historical reenactment weekend, etc.
Reconnect with Friends and Family
When was the last time you got together with your cousins or friends from college? There is no better time than the present to get together again. You can travel to them, invite them to vacation with you, or plan to meet somewhere in the middle.
Explore Close to Home
Remember that to travel, to see, and explore new things, you don’t have to travel far. You can be a tourist in your own hometown or go to a nearby area.
Last year, we explored several areas within a two hour drive of Oklahoma City (my hometown). We discovered towns, attractions, and state parks that were monumentally fun. We have so many fond memories from those travels. You can find local treasures and attractions if you look for them too.
Take a Road Trip and Get Lost on Purpose
Sometimes the best trips are those last minute getaways that are unplanned. When the opportunity arises, load the family in the car and head out in any direction. Explore anything that looks like fun along the way. We may discover interested historical sites, festivals, funky local food spots, monuments, museums, parks, attractions, and more.
You can spend the day or pack a bag and spend the night somewhere. The details aren’t important because it’s all about the journey here. You’ll create memories and tell stories about these tricks for years to come.
Make Your Family Travel Resolutions Now
Family travel is your chance to unplug and reconnect as a family. You don’t have to go to the ends of the Earth or empty the bank account to do it. You can stay close, explore for FREE or on the cheap, and just have fun together. Instead of “stuff”, give your family experience gifts instead. It makes your time together a priority.
This is the year you and your family will have more fun together. With a little planning, this will be the best year ever! Happy New Year!
