Give Chemicals the Bird! 3 Reasons Why You Should Use a Mineral Sunscreen

As you head outdoors, water and sunscreen are two essentials you should never leave home without. You probably put some thought into that refillable water bottle you bought to ensure it was BPA free. But what about your sunscreen?

The chemicals found in traditional sunscreens are as harmful as chemicals found in our food. Many chemicals found in sunscreens are known endocrine disruptors and have been linked to health risks and environmental impact. That’s why it’s important to choose a sunscreen that is free of harmful ingredients.

12 Scary Facts About Chemical Sunscreen

I switched to a mineral sunscreen years ago. Let me tell you why. One day, the kids and I were going to the pool. Before heading out, I used a traditional aerosol sunscreen on the kids and myself. After applying sunscreen, I placed the bottle on my dining room table and headed out. Later that day, we came home and I went to put the sunscreen back in the medicine cabinet. I lifted the bottle to find that the sunscreen had eaten the varnish off of my table. There was a clear ring of wood where the varnish was completely gone. I immediately threw out that sunscreen and started researching natural, mineral sunscreens. I have used a mineral  sunscreen ever since.

Here are 3 reasons to choose a mineral sunscreen for you and your family.

Mineral sunscreens are great for sensitive skin.

Mineral sunscreens aren’t absorbed into the skin. So they are less likely to cause skin irritation. Natural minerals found in mineral sunscreens actually form a barrier on the skin and reflect harmful UV rays. Traditional sunscreens are absorbed into the skin and scatter the sun’s rays into the skin.

Mineral sunscreens are free of harmful chemicals

Chemical based sunscreens use ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, phthalates, and parabens. These chemicals have been linked to everything from allergies to hormone disruption. Read more about these harmful ingredients and why some companies use them.

Mineral Sunscreens are effective immediately

Mineral sunscreens are effective immediately unlike many traditional sunscreens. Once you apply them, the start reflecting harmful UV rays and protect your skin.

There are several traditional sunscreens that state on their labels that you have to apply 20 minutes before going outdoors. Have you ever wondered why? Turns out the chemicals go through a reaction in your skin before they’re effective. Chemical sunscreens like avobenzone also break down quickly in the sun, requiring not-so-safe ingredients as stabilizers. Liquid plastics are also used to keep the chemicals from being absorbed too quickly.
