Over the past few years, there has been a food revolution. People want to eat “real” food. They are demanding to know what they are eating and finding out that our Western diet isn’t as healthy as it claims.
What is Real Food?
Real foods are those foods that grow in the garden, field, tree, vine, or on farm. It’s food that comes from it’s natural source or as close to it as possible. If your great-grandmother cooked with it, more than likely, it was real food.
I am not a nutritionist, doctor, or health professional. What I am is a mom who wants to provide the most nutritious foods possible for her family. Growing up, I remember my mother cooking all our meals. Going out to eat was a rare treat. My high school didn’t offer home economics and I just didn’t see a need to learn how to cook because Mom was there. In college, there were so many great restaurants to choose from, why cook when you could go out. When I married my husband, I still didn’t know how to cook. Luckily he did! Eventually, I did learn to make a few dishes with the help of packages, cans, and other convenience items. But we still ate out a few times a week. We weren’t concerned with nutrition, only convenience. We didn’t think that the prepackaged, premade foods were unhealthy. As it turned out, we were VERY wrong.
A few years ago, I became very sick. I had panic attacks, stomach issues, and what doctors believed to be a seizure disorder. Luckily, after much testing and ruling other things out, doctors found out that it wasn’t seizures, but hypoglycemia. They didn’t know why I had hypoglycemia or panic attacks but said to watch what I ate and prescribed medication for the panic attacks. Instead of treating the symptoms, I went to an old family friend to find out the cause. She was a Kinesiologist, a type of homeopathic health professional. She found that my diet was one of the contributing factors for my problems. From that day forward, I changed my diet based on her guidelines and research that I have done online and from books written by natural health professionals. I have never felt better.
I started a series about what real food is and what it isn’t. The tips and topics in this series helped me change the way I look at food and created a healthier way of life for myself any family. I hope you find them as useful as I do.
