This post was created as part of the Just Label It #ConcealOrReveal campaign in which I’m a compensated advocate for Mandatory GMO Labeling. All opinions expressed are my own.
We all want to eat better, live a little greener, and enjoy spending time with those we love. As a parent, we want to ensure that the foods we provide our family are the healthiest foods possible. That’s why we read food labels like we do. But what happens when the label doesn’t tell us the whole story?
Why are GMOs bad?
Unlike other countries, the United States does not mandate the labeling of GMOs, genetically mandated organisms, in food products. That means you have NO idea if the ingredients included in any given product are genetically modified. You may be asking, “Why are GMOs bad?” GMO crops have changed the face of farming in this country, and not necessarily for the good. Weeds are growing resistant to GMO crops leading to increased herbicide use. Glyphosate, the primary herbicide used on GMO crops, is considered a probable human carcinogen by the World Health Organization. Anna Lappé, bestselling author, healthy food advocate and mother of two said “Glyphosate is now found in rainwater, soil and in samples of both breast milk and infant formula.” You can read more about GMOs here.
Just Label It recently released the results on a study, conducted by Lake Research Partners, that asked moms about the major food brands they buy. The study found that brands that either don’t label GMO food ingredients in their products, or support anti-mandatory GMO labeling efforts risked losing study participants as customers. The survey tested 3 trusted household name brands trusted by families for generations. One of those brands was Quaker, a division of PepsiCo.
The survey found that:
- 81% of moms surveyed said they’d be less likely to purchase a brand’s products if they found out that a company was using GMO food ingredients
- Nearly 70% of moms were less likely to purchase products from Quaker and its parent company PepsiCo when told that the company funneled millions of dollars into campaigns to deny consumers the right to know about GMOs.
- Nearly 93% of moms want Quaker to label GMOs
- 80% want Quaker to stop funding anti-GMO labeling efforts
- 93% of mothers surveyed said that companies should be required to display a label saying that a product contains GMO food ingredients.
“Customers want to know if products contain GMO food ingredients and they feel betrayed by the brands they trust when they aren’t transparent about it,” said Joshua Ulibarri, Partner at Lake Research Partners, which conducted the poll. “They were even more concerned when they learned that these same brands fund efforts to block mandatory GMO food labeling.”
Quaker has been a trusted brand for generations. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t enjoy a product from Quaker. Unfortunately, Quaker and it’s parent company, PepsiCo, are one of several big food and biotechnology companies that spent more than $63 million lobbying in 2014 alone, much of it against GMO labeling, in addition to efforts against state-level labeling efforts.
Let Your Voice Be Heard
Over the past few weeks, well over 100,000 concerned consumers have added their names to a petition calling for Quaker and Pepsi to support a federal law that would make GMO labeling mandatory. Add your name to this petition and let Quaker know that you want to know what’s in your food and that you support nationwide GMO labeling.
Another recent national poll by the Mellman Group found that nearly 90% of Americans said it was important to know if the foods they purchased contained genetically engineered ingredients. Consumers, like us, want to make informed decisions about the foods we buy and eat. It should be our decision whether or not to buy foods made with GMOs. If a company is proud of the ingredients they use, then they shouldn’t be afraid to list that on their packaging. Over 135 companies including Chipotle and Patagonia support mandatory labeling of GMO’s as members of Just Label It. We are asking Quaker and Pepsi to do the same and Just Label It.
People all across the country want to know what’s in their food. Speak up and let your voice be heard by signing the petition and let Quaker know you want mandatory GMO labeling. Then share this campaign with others. When we all speak up, the sound will be thunderous and one that big business won’t be able to ignore.
