Lonely Planet is called this “Appalachia’s most surprising city”. This vibrant small city has a thriving art scene and is named among the Top 25 Small Towns for Art by AmericanStyle. It’s River Arts District features over 200 artists. In addition to great art, the area has a vast culinary scene with numerous James Beard nominated chefs. History lovers head to the Biltmore Estate for a walk back in time. The estate offer countless activities to explore. The Blue Ridge Mountains offers nature lovers the opportunity to don hiking boots, explore, and enjoy breathtaking scenery.
Fans of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks TV drama know the region because of the various filming locations. The show is making a comeback this year and that is one reason it’s on this year’s list. For outdoor families, the natural beauty of Mt Rainier National Park, San Juan Islands, Olympic National Park, Hot Rain Forest, Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, and the Washington Cascades offer ample opportunity to have fun and view local wildlife. Go hiking, camping, bird watching, kayaking, whale watching, opportunities are endless. Then head to Seattle to explore Pike Place Market, Seattle Aquarium, and some of the best museums on the region.
Probably the biggest surprise on this list, Lincoln is a Hip college city home to the University of Nebraska. The city offers museums and unique cultural events. Head to the University of Nebraska State Museum for the world’s largest articulated mammoth and other natural history exhibits. The area celebrates its 150th anniversary this year with parades, parties and festivals. For outdoor families, the city’s 130 mile trail system provides scenic byways to get outdoors. Pioneers park Nature Center features more hiking trails and the chance to see herds of bison, elk, and deer.
Palm Springs and its surrounding cities have been a hot playground for the rich and famous for decades. Now a popular resort community that offers plenty of year round family fun. The hip city vibe is seen throughout the city. But in the surrounding area, you can escape into the wild atop the Palm Springs Aerial Tram, Joshua Tree National Park, and Morongo Valley areas. If you want festivals, attend the Coachella Music Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, the twice a year Modernism Week, or the Stagecoach Country Music Festival. I used to live near Palm Springs and love all the family attractions and events the area offers. It should be a MUST see for family’s this year.
This year the National Park Service starts their 2nd century and it’s a great time to visit the national parks. Montana has one of the largest wilderness areas in the contiguous United States and is the Gateway to Glacier National Park. It’s some of the most pristine natural settings in the country. Head out and view the national Bison Range or view vast fields of wildflowers on a hike. It’s also one of the few places in the continental U.S. to see glaciers.
