Every adventure needs the right gear and that includes the right shoes. Like clothes, I want shoes to be versatile and multi-purpose. But one thing I don’t want is a really cute pair of shoes that KILL my feet. I’m sure many of you know exactly what I mean! So, I have put together this list of stylish, yet comfortable shoes for women because at a certain point we all say “Enough is enough” and ditch the cute “standing” shoes (Why call them that? Because that is all they are good for… standing)
Here are my footwear picks that feature comfortable shoes for women who are ACTIVE. No more “standing shoes”! These shoes are all designed for the active woman who is busy with their family, is active, hits the trail, travels, and more. This guide includes information on best use, fabric, fit/sizing, and where to find them. (Disclaimer: Affiliate links are included if you’d like to purchase. Adidas Terrex Agravic ~ $135
|Adidas is known for creating shoes to suit every sport and activity that gets you active. The Terrex Agravic women’s trail running shoe is no exception. It’s designed to give you support and traction on the trails, but is comfortable enough to wear around town. The mesh upper provides breathability while a Gore-Tex lining above the rubber sole gives some waterproofing. (Note: I should mention that this waterproof lining does not cover the entire shoe, but rises above the sole onto the mesh in varying amounts. Great for preventing moisture from entering the shoe due to dew or frost in grass or light brush, or going through water puddles.)
You will regularly find me wearing these at the gym, on the trail, and around town. The Boost™ midsole supports the arch and provides what Adidas calls “endless energy”. Basically the midsole’s cushion provides bounce that returns energy and prevents fatigue. All I know is that I can walk all day in these shoes without my legs or feet hurting afterwards.
BOGS Auburn Slip On Leather Boot ~ $140
|I love when I find stylish, comfortable shoes that aren’t afraid of getting wet. This mid Auburn Slip On from BOGS is a waterproof leather boot that is perfect for urban adventure and trails. They slip on and off easily and the top of the boot comes just above the ankle. These boots can be paired with a pair of jeans, slacks, or a dress. They are perfect for going through airport TSA checkpoints, which is a huge plus for winter travel.
The upper portion of these boots are full grain leather with a woven, stretchy sides around the ankles. This combination makes them easy to slip on and off while providing great support while wearing them. The boot has a modest heel of 1 1/8 inches and the soles provide great grip, even on wet pavement. Max-Wick technology move moisture away from your feet, keeping them dry and a special lining helps fight odor. All features that are necessary, in my book, for a waterproof shoe. I find that this show fits true to size. Find it at BOGS Footwear or on BOGS Footwear
ECCO Soft 7 Quilted Slip On ~ $160
|I can’t tell you how many compliments I get on these Soft 7 Quilted Slip On when I wear them. I wear them with everything from shorts in warmer weather to leggings and khakis. This quilted leather slip on is super cute and extremely comfortable.
A large part of these shoes’ comfort come from the soles. ECCO uses what they call FLUIDFORM™ to create a shoe bed/sole that fits the foot and provides exceptional comfort. The soles are a shock absorbing material that is injection molded directly onto the upper part of the shoe. The result is a comfortable shoe for women that you can wear all day and night.
Kamik Rogue9 Boot ~ $109
|On this list of comfortable shoes for women, the list won’t be complete without a tall boot. During cold months, you want a boot that is comfortable, will keep your feet dry, and looks great. You get all that in this Rogue9 Boot from Kamik. This leather boot is waterproof to protect against rain and snow.
As I write this article, winter temperatures have been in the negative numbers with the wind chill. I have been wearing these boots and will attest to how well they keep your feet warm. 3M Thinsulate insultation keeps your feet warmer than down and the sherpa like texture feels really good. Kamik says these boots are rated to -25F/-32C. I believe them!
For wet and snowy conditions, the textured rubber sole provides great grip on most any surface. The heel on the boot is 1” and is also textured for added grip. The insole prevents odors and helps keep your feet dry.
This boot has lacing up the front and a side zipper for easy on and off. I actually never untie them now that I have the laces the way I like. That side zipper on the each side of the leg makes getting the boots on and off very convenient. These boots are true to size. Overall, this is a great waterproof boot that is comfortable for all day wear. Find these boots at Kamik.com or Kamik.com
Ecco Biom Venture Affect GTX ~ $190
|For those that want breathability, this is the ultimate choice. New for 2018, ECCO has the Biom Venture Affect GTX. Thanks to Biom Natural Motion Technology and air channels in the mid sole, this shoe allows for maximum air flow. A Gore-TEX Surround mesh upper provides additional air exchange while having the added benefit of being waterproof. It has the injection molded rubber outsole that ECCO shoes are known for and a specially designed sole for several outdoor activities. There is a pedal zone for biking and a slightly more aggressive sole pattern than the more casual Soft 7 I mentioned earlier. This combination of features makes it perfect for a busy woman.
Note: My daughter “borrowed” these from my closet and has been wearing them to dance (hip-hop) class. She said she felt that her feet weren’t as tired after class. I don’t think I’ll be getting these back any time soon.
On fit, I feel like the Biom Venture Affect GTX is a little narrow. I went a half size larger for a more comfortable fit. For lacing, the speed lace system eliminates the need to tie your shoes and you no longer how to worry about stepping on your laces. I found that it took a little getting used to, but I liked the ability to adjust my fit during hikes with a quick move of the toggle. Find them on ECCO.com
KEEN Terradora Hiking Boot ~ $140
|You need a comfortable pair of hiking boots if you are active outdoors. The Terradora Hiking Boot from KEEN is perfect for active woman because it’s specifically design for her feet. This lightweight hiker is waterproof and really comfortable.
Unlike a few hikers I’ve owned, the Terradora is flexible in the sole and moves with my foot while providing the protection and support I want while hiking. The best part of the shoe for me is the shoe is designed to cover and cushion the ankle, then taper down in the back. The back of this shoe sits lower than others. Now when I flex my foot, the shoe doesn’t rub against that tendon like others have in the past.
These hikers are a waterproof mesh upper and rubber sole. The tread provides great grip on a variety of surfaces including pavement. This hiker fits true to size. If you have a wider foot, you may want to consider going up a size. Find it at KEEN.com or on Amazon.com
These are my top picks for comfotable shoes for women this season. They will all help you get outdoors more often, get active, and having fun no matter where you are. Be sure to take a look at our outdoorsy gifts for her guide that features clothing, luggage, and more.
