Everything You Need to Know About Blueberry Picking with Kids

boy blueberry picking

Blueberry picking is a fun-filled summer-time adventure for families and food lovers. Fresh, ripe berries are amazing orbs of yummy deliciousness. We love going as a family and share helpful tips for your next time to the farm. Plus, there is just nothing like fresh berries over ice cream or a trifle. Don’t you agree? So we’ll share a few recipes too!!!

If you have never been berry picking, blueberries are great to start with. The bushes are thornless, so little fingers won’t get cut up. There is no mistaking when the berries are ready to be picked. The ripe berries turn deep blue and easily pull off the stem. The only downside to blueberry picking is the season, in most areas, only runs in July and August. So the season is pretty short.

This summer, we were determined to go blueberry picking. I found a great local farm for us to go and explore. So we headed out to knock this yummy adventure off this summer’s bucket list.

Thunderbird Farms in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma is a small family farm outside Tulsa. The day we went was gorgeous. It wasn’t too hot and there was an amazing breeze that morning. It kept things cool and enjoyable the entire time we were there.

My family started down one row of blueberry bushes and started picking big fat blueberries. I will admit that we had to taste as we went. You know, to make sure they were ripe and delicious. {Grin} They were really tasty and we each picked a bucket full.

The kids loved picking berries. We took some friends with us too. It was great to catch up and spend the day together. There’s nothing like good food and friends!

If you are looking for a local  pick your own farm, check out Pick Your Own  or Local Harvest. This is where I go to find great local food. Hopefully, you’ll find a local farm too.

So now that I have all these blueberries,  what will I do with them? Any ideas?

Thanks Shari! It was a lot of fun. Luckily, I was able to freeze most of the berries. I hope you include more recipes soon.

Blueberry waffles are a favorite here. As long as they eat healthy, I’d offer fruits and veggies anyway they’ll eat them.

This blueberry picking adventure sounds like a blast! I love how you described the berries as “amazing orbs of yummy deliciousness” – so true! I’ve been berry picking a few times, and it’s always a great family activity. Like you, we couldn’t resist tasting as we picked. It’s the best way to make sure they’re perfect. Now, I’m curious about those recipes. What’s your favorite way to use blueberries? And how do you think they’d pair with other fruits in a trifle?
