Wisconsin’s Lake Country is an excellent family hot spot all year round including great skiing in winter and beach fun in summer. Bed and breakfast stay and quaint inns dot the area providing a popular lodging option. Yet for travelers looking for a more modern setting, The Dorr in Sister Bay is a luxurious and modern yet rustic oasis. With an unforgettable view of the lake, this Nordic-inspired hotel is ideal for couples or families looking to make memories in Door County, Wisconsin.
This summer, I stayed at The Dorr Hotel as I traveled around Door County. I loved the hotel’s warm atmosphere and Nordic design aesthetic. This is the type of modern hotel I enjoy staying at when traveling with my teens. It’s centrally located making it the perfect home base to explore the area. You’ll enjoy staying here too!

A Modern Hotel in Sister Bay, Wisconsin
The Dorr hotel is located in the heart of Sister Bay’s downtown area right on famous Highway 42. It’s not uncommon for people to drive by and not even notice The Dorr Hotel! But once you see it, it makes quite the impression!
The hotel is Scandinavian in design with minimal decor and a unique sense of hygge – Norwegian coziness. It really reminds me of my stay in Finnish Lapland. The lobby features a beautiful mural created by a local artist and a fireplace that’s always lit. It’s the ideal place for breakfast, afternoon tea, midday game of scrabble, or evening drinks.
There are also two very comfy seating areas with large windows to take in the view of Lake Michigan, just steps away, and allow natural light to stream through.
There is also a really nice outdoor deck and lawn area beckoning guests to spend time in the fresh air with a fire pit, comfortable seating, and outdoor games.
Heart of Sister Bay
Step outside the hotel and you are easily within walking distance to top-rated restaurants, shops, Waterfront Park, and the marina. Sister Bay’s downtown area is walkable and great for families and couples alike. Door County Creamery and Analog Coffee and Ice Cream are located directly across the street from the hotel. Down the street are the popular Wild Tomato Wood-fired Pizza and Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant with their “must-see” goats grazing on the roof. Both have excellent food! Right behind Wild Tomato is the community waterfront park with weekly summer concerts, playground, and more.
Staying at The Dorr
The Dorr is family-friendly with rooms that are very nicely appointed. There are 47 rooms and 9 King suites. Guest rooms include custom-crafted beds with pillow-top mattresses and premium bedding. Suites sleep 4 with cozy king beds, a sleeper sofa, and a separate sitting area. Other rooms have either a king bed or two queen beds. All rooms have private balconies or porches providing stunning views of Lake Michigan. Room rates start at $253 a night.
June 2021 – I stayed here in a King hotel room and found the room to be very spacious and above all comfortable. The bed and linens were extremely luxurious and it was easy to drop into bed for a restless night’s sleep. I had a view of the great lawn below and the lake in the distance. I enjoyed walking up and enjoying my morning coffee on that balcony. Room amenities included a mini-fridge, Keurig coffee maker, flat-screen Smart TV, USB power ports, Bluetooth speaker, and ample storage.
Grab and Go Breakfast
Breakfast is included in the nightly rate. During my stay, “Grab and Go” options were provided. The Dorr’s in-house chef makes fresh muffins and energy bars daily which are superb. There was also fresh fruit, yogurt, juice, and coffee.
Stays at this Door County hotel require a 2-night minimum weekdays and a 3-night weekend minimum stay. You can book online at www.thedorrhotel.com.
Beer and Wine Bar
Although there is no on-site restaurant, small plates and drinks are served in the lobby beer and wine bar. Guests receive a complimentary beverage at check-in that may be used during their stay. After a long day on the road or exploring the area, it’s quite nice to unwind by the lobby fireplace with a glass of wine or beer.
Amenities at The Dorr
The hotel is thinking ahead for the traveler that didn’t plan ahead with a gear closet filled with bicycle helmets, bocce balls, backpacks, snowshoes, bean bags, picnic baskets, etc. If you have forgotten gear, want to play a game on the great lawn, or plan a spur of the moment, you can borrow from the gear closet free of charge.
There is no on-site fitness center, but guests have 24-hour access to the Sister Bay Athletic Club and its facility a short walk from the hotel. The hotel does not have an onsite pool, but Sister Bay Beach is a short walk away. Planned for the future are onsite sauna and flat tire e-bikes rentals.
Staying at The Dorr is like no other hotel experience in Door County. If you’re looking for a cozy getaway or family vacation, then I highly recommend that you book here. You will not be disappointed!
