Why the Guardian Bikes 20″ Airos is the Best Bike for a 7-Year-Old (Review)

Looking to take the training wheels off and get a new bike for your 7-year-old child? Check out Guardian Bikes Airos! It’s a great choice for new riders or children who are ready to upgrade from a smaller bike.

Here’s why: Guardian Bikes designs and builds their bikes for children. These aren’t just scaled-down versions of an adult bike. Designed with a lower frame for greater stability and balance, added safety features, like easy-to-use handbrakes make this the best bike for 7-year-olds learning how to ride.

Review of Airos 20″ Large Bicycle from Guardian Bikes

I was looking for a new bike without training wheels that would accommodate my 7-year-old daughter’s need for a good big girl bike to learn how to ride on. We have only had big store bikes for my older boys and we had planned to go that route if it wasn’t for Guardian Bikes. Guardian Bikes sent us a 20-inch Large Airos Bike to test out and we couldn’t be happier.

The day she got her new Big Girl bike

My daughter loves this bike. She loves the purple color and the sleek design. My daughter loves that she can use a hand brake and that she can shift into different gears.

The thing my husband and I like best is that the whole bike is geared with her in mind. She can reach the ground easier and place her feet down flat (similar to a balance bike), which makes starting and stopping much simpler. The bike frame is low to the ground which gives her a sense of stability as she rides. She doesn’t feel like she is going to tip over. The SureStop braking system is an added safety feature that we love. It performs like ABS brakes do for your car and prevent head-over-handlebar accidents.

We love the sturdiness of the frame too. The Airos is made with a lightweight aluminum frame that is much lighter than other mass-market/big store bikes. Both my husband and I even rode it and the frame held us without any issue. The smoothness and handling of the bike were so good, that we wished they made adult bikes the same way. Though I’m told that is in the works.  😉

Why is this bike easier to ride?

We asked Guardian Bikes this question. Here is their response.

It’s all in the geometry. Our bikes are designed like sports cars with a wide wheelbase, lighter frame,  and a lower center of gravity to give the rider more stability. These are important for any rider learning how to ride. Most mass-market bikes are shrunken-down versions of adult bikes. Some weigh as much as 75% of a child’s weight. That makes it difficult to control and steer. Our bikes are built for kids with a focus on safety, quality, and fun.

Choosing the Right Size

Ordering a bicycle online can be tricky when it comes to picking the right size. I was glad to see that Guardian Bikes has the RideSizer Tool on their website as well as a 3D model of how your child will fit in the bike.  The tool was easy to use and helped make sure the bike was specific to my daughter’s height, which would help with balance and riding as a whole. We followed the instructions and the bike fit my daughter perfectly.

The best part is they offer a 365-day guarantee. If it doesn’t fit, they will send you a different size. If you decide the bike isn’t for you, they give you a full refund and ask you to donate it to charity instead of shipping the bike back.

Ease of Assembly

This bike was very easy to put together. It arrives like you see below.

Unlike other big-box store bikes that come in a million pieces and you have to put together (like Ikea furniture), my daughter’s bike came pre-assembled by a certified technician from Guardian Bikes.

With clear instructions that were easy to follow, I attached the handlebars and pedals in less than 20 minutes with no issues.

Final Thoughts on the Airos 20″ Bike from Guardian Bikes

Overall, we are extremely happy with the Airos 20” bicycle from Guardian Bikes. This bike provides a great way to teach our daughter to ride without training wheels. We hope to purchase more for our older children as they develop bikes for older kids (Expected 2023.)

If you are looking for a bike that is easy to ride, lightweight, and has great features, then the Guardian Bikes Airos is the best choice for you. This bike is perfect for teaching your child how to ride without training wheels and provides a great way for them to learn. Visit them at GuardianBikes.com to see this and their own bicycles from balance bikes through 24″ frames.

Unfortunately, they discontinued the Airos bikes in 2023. The only way to raise the handlebars seems to be buying a 4.5″ rise handlebar for $30.
