When thinking of a southern college area, images of bustling cities and jam-packed streets are likely to come to mind. However, tucked away throughout the city of Hattiesburg MS, home to Southern Mississippi University, is a nature lover’s paradise known as the Longleaf Trace.

This 44-mile-long rail-to-trail path nature winds through some of the most scenic areas in the state. This nature haven is perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of a college town and finding peace in the great outdoors.
Along the trail is another hidden gem, the Longleaf Piney Resort. This resort is located directly adjacent to the trail and is the perfect place to stay and explore the natural beauty of the area. I recently stayed here for a weekend getaway and was treated to silence and tranquility. Let’s take a closer look at these two must-see destinations in Hattiesburg.
The Longleaf Trace: A Trail to Explore
Named after the longleaf pine trees that line its path, the Longleaf Trace is a popular destination for walkers, runners, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. The trail was once a railway line in the area. Today the smooth surface and gentle grades make it accessible for people of all ages and abilities. Along the way, you’ll discover bridges, boardwalks, and picnic areas to stop and rest or take in the picturesque views.
This recreational bike trail also passes through some of Hattiesburg’s most beautiful natural areas, including wetlands, forests, and fields. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as deer, rabbits, and various bird species that call this area home.
When I visited last, I witnessed a gentle afternoon rain shower, and it was a sight to behold. Afterward, the rain stopped, and the path was lined with frogs and even a few deer. It was a true nature lover’s delight! The trail is also well-maintained, making it easy to navigate and enjoyable for all visitors.
The trail starts in downtown Hattiesburg at the University of Southern Mississippi and winds through Sumrall, Bassfield, and Carson before ending in Prentiss, a small town about 30 miles north. Point to point from Hattiesburg to Prentiss is 44 miles.
Along the way, you will find road crossings, rest stops, several campsites, and picnic spots where you can take a break from your hike or cycle or just enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds of nature.
The trail has multiple access points with parking lots like Lott Circle for convenience making it easy to explore different sections for a quick out and back walk or plan out your route for the day.

The resort has been thoughtfully curated to create a welcoming atmosphere that invites guests to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with nature.

Each cabin/tiny home has a kitchenette with a coffeemaker, microwave, and dishes. They each also have their own campfire area and hammocks to relax and soak in the natural surroundings.
During my stay, I was in the Fais Do Do tiny house, a small modular home that sleeps 2. What I loved best about this home is its roll-up door/wall that opened up to a lovely patio. One afternoon, I raised that door and enjoyed an afternoon rainshower from the comfort of my bed – it was simply magical. There was no road noise, no city light population, just the sounds and beauty of nature.
Each home is unique and designed with a different theme, such as “Shingdig” or “Shagri La.” The cozy interiors are furnished with rustic decor and modern amenities, providing a perfect balance of comfort and charm.

One of the biggest draws for this property is its proximity to the trail. You are quite literally steps away from the entrance of Longleaf Trace. For those who want to get out on the trace, the resort offers complimentary bicycle rentals and helmets to its guests.
