Let’s be real—getting teenagers excited about family activities can be… challenging. But here’s the thing: even my eye-rolling high schoolers can’t help but be impressed by some of these next-level holiday light displays. Trust me, I’ve done the legwork (and dealt with the “are we there yet?” texts from the backseat).
From November through January, cities and towns across America are basically competing for who can create the most Instagram-worthy light displays, and I’m here for it. We’re not just talking about your neighbor’s inflatable Santa collection—these are full-on immersive experiences that even got my 16-year-old to look up from their phone. Bonus: most of these winter vacation ideas for families have great photo ops, and some even have light tunnels that make perfect TikTok backdrops (yes, I know how to speak teen).

While some families are heading to Europe for those famous Christmas markets (cool if you can swing it!), we’ve found plenty of amazing displays right here at home that won’t require a passport or emptying the college fund. Whether you’re up for a quick evening adventure or wanting to turn this into a weekend getaway, I’ve got you covered with spots that’ll impress even the most discerning teenager—and maybe, just maybe, create some memories they won’t find totally cringe.
If you’re on the hunt for Christmas lights near you, look no further! Together with my partners at Family Travel Consulting, we have put together some of the top places for winter holiday vacations and where to see the best holiday lights this year (listed alphabetically by city) sponsored by CroisiEurope. Before I share the list, here’s a word for our sponsors.
Europe at the Christmas Holidays
Between late November and Christmas Eve, don’t miss the chance to experience one of Europe’s top Christmas Markets together. The France-based CroisiEurope river cruise company makes it comfortable and easy to discover authentic holiday markets. Shop, dine and be entertained as lights twinkle and, if you’re lucky, snowflakes fall on historic town squares.
Select December 2024 departures are still available with up to 50% savings. Choose from 4 to 7-day cruises aboard a 22 passenger canal barge or a more traditional river cruise ship. Take in the beauty of Christmas on the Danube, or Delight in the Christmas Markets of the Neckar Valley . If you’re looking for something a little different, consider discovering the magic of Naples, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast.
CroisEurope is offering December and Christmas departures. Other options include Christmas or New Years in Venice or the Andalusian region of Spain. If you can’t make it for Christmas, how about the world famous celebration of Carnival in Venice?
If you’d rather chase the Winter sun, consider a 7-day cruise through the Canary Islands. CroisiEurope offers cruises through here from November through early March.

I feel so lucky that I’ve been able to experience about half the suggestions on this awesome list. And, now I’ve added a few more to my holiday lights bucket list. At the top (based on my location in Kansas City)? Oklahoma City!

I was excited to find your article and didn’t realize I’ll be close to a few of these before Christmas. Pinned for keepsakes.

Leu Gardens in Orlando has some absolutely amazing holiday displays! Cannot recommend checking them out enough. I don’t see them on guides like this often, so thanks for being so thorough! Can’t wait to check out all of your suggestions!

What a great list. Currently on a cruise and love how the ship is decked for Christmas. If I wasn’t already traveling I’d visit some of these spots. Hoping to see the Gingerbread House Competition in Asheville and Hershey’s Candy Cane Lane next year.

Had no idea there were so many great light shows in the USA! We’ve been traveling a lot in Europe this year and now are even more excited to go home for the holidays. Thanks for this great list!
