Electric Wonderlands: A Guide to America’s Most Spectacular Holiday Light Shows

Let’s be real—getting teenagers excited about family activities can be… challenging. But here’s the thing: even my eye-rolling high schoolers can’t help but be impressed by some of these next-level holiday light displays. Trust me, I’ve done the legwork (and dealt with the “are we there yet?” texts from the backseat).

From November through January, cities and towns across America are basically competing for who can create the most Instagram-worthy light displays, and I’m here for it. We’re not just talking about your neighbor’s inflatable Santa collection—these are full-on immersive experiences that even got my 16-year-old to look up from their phone. Bonus: most of these winter vacation ideas for families have great photo ops, and some even have light tunnels that make perfect TikTok backdrops (yes, I know how to speak teen).

While some families are heading to Europe for those famous Christmas markets (cool if you can swing it!), we’ve found plenty of amazing displays right here at home that won’t require a passport or emptying the college fund. Whether you’re up for a quick evening adventure or wanting to turn this into a weekend getaway, I’ve got you covered with spots that’ll impress even the most discerning teenager—and maybe, just maybe, create some memories they won’t find totally cringe.

Explore this enchanting spectacle safely with a delightful 25-minute drive in your own vehicle, traversing one mile of wondrous cavern passageways. Alternatively, let them do the driving and hop on their 30-minute Christmas Express.

Enjoy live music performances and shop for unique Christmas gifts at their Holiday Arts and Crafts Festival.

Hop on the Cane River Queen’s Paddlewheel boat for a 90-minute tour of the beautifully adorned Christmas lights along the majestic Cane River Lake. Make sure to sample delicious holiday treats like hot cocoa, and ride the Ferris wheel as you listen to live music performances. PIGEON FORGE, TENNESSEE

During the city’s annual Pigeon Forge Winterfest, the entire town transforms into a magical winter wonderland. Explore the Wonders of Light Walking Trail and the Winterest Driving Tour of Lights, spanning 6 miles along the river, adorned with stunning light sculptures and festive decorations.

All are welcome, including pets and wheelchairs. Don’t miss the enchantment of Dollywood theme park, where over 5 million lights illuminate the park, accompanied by a magnificent 50-foot tall tree for “Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas.”

Phoenix-Scottsdale during the holidays is a captivating destination that combines a temperate climate, golf, and beautiful resorts. Befitting Turtle Bay Exploration Park’s environmental mission, larger than life lizards, tortoises and butterflies occupy the Australian Garden.
