Experience Puerto Vallarta With Your Teens: A 4 or 5-Day Travel Itinerary

Puerto Vallarta has earned its reputation as a premier destination, offering the perfect mix of vibrant Mexican culture, stunning beaches, and upscale accommodations. This coastal gem provides a wide array of engaging activities for families traveling with teenagers to ensure fun and excitement for everyone.

On a recent press trip, I had the opportunity to experience one of Puerto Vallarta’s finest resorts and explore this charming coastal city. If found it to be the perfect blend of beach getaways, local culture, and outdoor adventure.

Where to Stay in Puerto Vallarta

Our journey began at the Buenaventura Grand Hotel, an all-inclusive resort that perfectly balances luxury with authentic Mexican hospitality. The resort’s location offers easy access to Puerto Vallarta’s famous Malecón (boardwalk) while providing a peaceful retreat from the city’s bustling energy.

I loved this resort for its perfect balance of convenience and seclusion. It offered easy access to town while still feeling like a private oasis. One of the highlights of my trip to Puerto Vallarta was exploring the vibrant Malecón. This lively boardwalk, just a short 10-minute walk from the resort, is bursting with energy, lined with charming shops, delicious restaurants, and captivating street performers. It’s the ideal spot to immerse yourself in the local culture.

Buenaventura Grand Hotel Resort Highlights:

  • Beachfront location with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean
  • Spacious rooms are elegantly designed with modern amenities and feature either ocean or garden views
  • World-class spa facilities with skilled massage therapists
  • Multiple dining options including the stunning Sunset Restaurant and the locally-inspired Frutas y Flores
  • Engaging in activities like mixology classes at the Sky Bar and beachfront yoga
  • Beautiful ocean-view pools and beach access
  • Weekly themed dinners and nightly live entertainment

Dining Experience

The culinary offerings at Buenaventura Grand Hotel deserve special mention. From casual poolside fare to elegant dinner services, the resort’s restaurants cater to every palate. The Sunset Restaurant offers particularly memorable dining experiences with spectacular ocean views, while Frutas y Flores showcases the best of Mexican cuisine with a modern twist.

Perfect 4 or 5-Day Puerto Vallarta Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Relaxation

  • Afternoon arrival and check-in
  • Explore the resort grounds
  • Welcome dinner at Frutas y Flores Restaurant
  • Evening stroll on the beach

On my first day, I plan for a very loose day. One just never knows how flights will work out, and if they’re like me, I just want to relax when I arrive. At the resort, you can take time to explore your surroundings, enjoy a refreshing drink by the pool, take a dip to unwind from your travels, or end your evening with a walk on the beautiful beaches.

I found that a car wasn’t necessary while in Puerto Vallarta. I prearranged for an airport car service and Uber/Lyft taxis when needed. Most of the activities on my itinerary were easily accessible by foot or short ride share away.

Day 2: Wellness and Indulgence

  • Morning yoga by the beach
  • Spa treatment
  • Afternoon at leisure by the pool
  • Evening mixology class and dinner

After a day of travel, taking care of yourself and recharging your batteries is important. That’s why I highly recommend starting your day two (your first full day) in Puerto Vallarta with a morning yoga session by the beach. The gentle sound of waves crashing against the shore and the warm sun on your skin will help you find inner peace and set the tone for the rest of your trip. It’s a great activity to do together with your teens.

Afterward, treat yourself to a spa treatment at the resort’s Shakti Spa. I indulged in a 60-minute massage in the outdoor space where I could hear the waves crashing on the beach. Trust me, after a hectic travel day, I deserved it and it was the perfect way to get into vacation mode.

For lunch, order delicious food and drinks by the pool or opt for the lunch buffet at the Sunset Restaurant. Take this time to unwind, relax by the pool, head to the beach, or explore the resort’s amenities. The Buenaventura has a full schedule of daily activities guests can participate in, from yoga classes, trivia, and pool games, to mixology classes.

Buenaventura hosts a Tropical Night dinner on Monday nights and a Mexican Fiesta on Thursdays.  On these themed nights, guests can enjoy traditional music and dance performances while dining on delicious local cuisine served buffet style on the beach

After dinner, take a walk on the beach under the starry sky or grab a drink at one of the resort’s bars. End your night by listening to live music and dancing under the moonlight. This is what paradise feels like.

Day 3: Cultural Exploration & Local Arts

The true essence of Puerto Vallarta comes alive along its iconic Malecón and the enchanting streets of the Zona Romantica (Romantic Zone). Here, you can easily lose yourself for an entire day, exploring vibrant local markets, unique boutique shops, delightful restaurants, and lively nightlife.

Here’s a quick guide to experiencing the best of this district.

Morning: The Iconic Malecón

Start your day at the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose crown-topped spire has become the symbol of Puerto Vallarta. Time your visit before 11 AM to enjoy cooler temperatures and smaller crowds. The church’s intricate interior and beautiful architecture offer perfect photo opportunities.

  • Indigenous Huichol artisans creating intricate beadwork – these pieces make great souvenirs to bring home
  • Street performers and musicians add to the vibrant atmosphere

  • Silver Jewelry
  • Authentic Mexican vanilla

Romantic Zone Shopping:

  • Guadalupe Sanchez Street: Art galleries and boutiques

Day 4: Adventure Day

Start your last full day early to make the most of Puerto Vallarta’s incredible outdoor activities. While the resort offers plenty of relaxation, the surrounding area is rich with adventures waiting to be discovered. Here are some of our top-recommended excursions:

Ocean Adventures

  • Marietas Islands Hidden Beach Tour: Visit the famous “Hidden Beach” at the Marietas Islands. This exclusive boat excursion has limited daily permits, so book well in advance. Along with visiting the secluded beach, you’ll have opportunities to spot blue-footed boobies and humpback whales (in season).

Land Explorations

  • RZR/ATV Tour Ride & Suspension Bridge Tour: For thrill-seekers, this 5-hour ATV adventure takes you on the world’s longest suspension bridge and then through the Sierra Madre mountains.
  • Canopy Zipline Adventure: The Los Veranos Canopy Tour offers Mexico’s longest and fastest zipline circuit. Located in a tropical forest preserve, you’ll soar through 14 different ziplines while enjoying spectacular views of Banderas Bay.

Cultural Experiences

  • Rhythms of the Night: End your adventure day with this magical sunset sail and dinner show. You’ll cruise to Las Caletas, a secluded beach, where you’ll enjoy fire-lit performances celebrating Mexican culture followed by a gourmet dinner under the stars.

Booking Tips:

  • Book activities at least 48 hours in advance during peak season
  • Most tours include hotel pickup and drop-off
  • Bring cash for gratuities and local purchases
  • Wear biodegradable sunscreen to protect marine life
  • Consider booking morning tours to avoid afternoon heat and potential rain showers

After your chosen adventure, return to the resort for:

  • Relaxation at the pool or enjoy more beach days
  • Optional spa treatment to soothe tired muscles
  • Sunset cocktails at Sky Bar
  • Farewell dinner at Sunset Restaurant

Pro Tips for Adventure Day

  • Pack a small backpack with essentials
  • Don’t forget your camera
  • Consider motion sickness medication if you’re joining a boat tour
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day

Best Time to Travel to Puerto Vallarta

While it may be tempting to visit during peak season (November to April), consider planning your trip for late October or early November instead. Plus there is a large Dias de los Muertos celebration on November 2nd that is rich in Mexican culture and tradition.

During this time, the weather in Puerto Vallarta is ideal. With temperatures ranging from 75-85°F (24-29°C), you can expect sunny days perfect for lounging on the beach or participating in water activities like snorkeling or surfing. The humidity also tends to be lower than other times of the year, making it more comfortable to explore the city.

Packing Essentials

Pack light but smart for Puerto Vallarta. You’ll need:

  • Resort casual wear for day
  • A few elegant-casual outfits for dinner
  • Beach and pool essentials
  • Comfortable walking shoes for exploring
  • Workout/yoga wear if you plan to take advantage of fitness offerings

Getting There

Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) is well-connected with direct flights from many major U.S. cities. The resort is approximately 15 minutes from the airport, and transportation can be arranged through the hotel’s concierge service.

Final Thoughts

Buenaventura Grand Hotel & Great Moments All-inclusive resort offers the perfect base for exploring Puerto Vallarta. There are other options in the area, but I found this resort to be a great balance of luxury, location, and affordability. With its beautiful beachfront setting, multiple dining options, and abundance of activities, it’s sure to provide a memorable vacation for anyone looking for a getaway filled with relaxation and adventure.

Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or a bit of both, Puerto Vallarta provides everything needed for a memorable Mexican vacation. The combination of authentic Mexican charm, colorful cultural history, and some of the best beaches in Mexico makes it an excellent choice for travelers looking to experience the best of what this vibrant country has to offer. From its charming cobblestone streets and picturesque old town to its stunning beaches and lively nightlife, Puerto Vallarta truly has something for everyone.
