When to Arrive: Timing is Everything
One of the first things to consider when planning your airport arrival is the time of your flight. Most airlines recommend arriving at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. Additional time is needed when flying to an international destination because you will need to go to the check-in desk for a passport check.
If you are one of those early birds taking the first flight out, you may want to check with the airport to ensure that security will be open at the time of your arrival. Some smaller airports may only have security checkpoints open during peak hours, so it is better to be prepared and arrive early if needed.
If you are checking luggage, make sure to arrive at the airport with enough time for it to be processed and loaded onto the plane. This process can take up to an hour, so factor that time into your arrival plans. Also, keep in mind that airlines have a cut-off time for checking baggage, usually 45 minutes before domestic flights and 60 minutes before international flights.
Additionally, if you or your traveling companions will need additional time or assistance to go through security, it is best to arrive even earlier. This could include individuals with disabilities, those traveling with young children, or anyone who requires special accommodations.
Airlines’ Recommendations and Policies
Airlines often provide guidelines on when to arrive at the airport. You can find this on their websites or in their app. These recommendations can vary, so it’s essential to check with your specific airline to ensure a smooth journey.

What is the Best Time to Fly?
The best times to fly are generally during off-peak hours. Early mornings or late nights are the sweet spots for avoiding crowds. Flying during off-peak hours means avoiding rush hour traffic, less hassle, shorter lines, and an overall quicker airport experience.
The Wisdom of Arriving Early
Arriving early not only allows you to navigate potential delays with ease but also provides you with the opportunity to relax, shop, or enjoy a meal before your flight. It’s always better to have extra time than to rush through the airport.
Online Check-In: Your First Time-Saver
One way to reduce the amount of time spent at the airport is by checking in online before your arrival.
Online check-in not only saves you time by skipping the check-in counter but also allows you to select your seat and avoid long lines at the airport check-in desks. Simply check-in through the airline’s website or app before arriving, and you’ll receive a digital boarding pass.
If you are checking a bag, you can still check-in online and prepay for your bags if needed. Then when you arrive at the airport, proceed to the designated counter to drop it off. This will save you even more time and get you through security faster.
Know the Security Process For A Smooth Transition
Understanding the security process in advance can help make your journey through the checkpoint a breeze. Plus if you are traveling with small children or require special accommodations, knowing the process can help you prepare and save time.
Some tips to make the security process go smoothly include:
Understanding the Screening Process
Familiarize yourself with the security screening process. You’ll typically need to remove your shoes, belt, and coats, and place them in a bin along with your laptop, any liquids, and luggage.
This TSA video demonstrates the process at larger airports. Smaller airports are similar.
Preparing Kids and Teens for the Process
If you’re traveling with children or teenagers, take a moment to explain the security process to them. Knowing what to expect can make the experience less intimidating and less stressful for all involved.
For younger children, the TSA website and YouTube channel offer a library of videos on topics ranging from traveling with snacks to traveling during the holidays.
There are also books available for toddlers to school-aged children to help understand the process.

Expedited Security Options: Get Ahead of the Line
For frequent travelers or those looking to save more time, there are expedited clearance options to consider.
Exploring TSA PreCheck and Clear
Two popular programs, TSA PreCheck and Clear, offer expedited security screening. TSA PreCheck allows pre-screened travelers to bypass standard security lines, while Clear uses biometric data for a quicker process.
With these programs, you’ll have dedicated lanes and often won’t need to remove your shoes, belts, or laptops. It’s a time-saving benefit that can be well worth the investment for those who travel frequently.
Personally, I have these services as well as Global Entry for clearing U.S. customs after international travel. It has saved me countless hours and headaches, especially during peak travel times and at busy airports like La Guardia (New York City) and LAX (Los Angeles).
If I had to choose just one option, I would keep TSA PreCheck. The cost is significantly lower than Clear and Global Entry, and it covers all of the domestic flights I take. Plus, it’s widely accepted at major airports across the country. Clear is only available in select airports and the fee is an annual one.
Why They’re Worth Considering: These services can significantly reduce the stress of airport security, ensuring you spend less time in lines and more time enjoying your journey.

Packing Smart: A Stress-Reducing Strategy
What you pack and how you pack can greatly impact your airport experience. Be sure to check what the prohibited items are before your trip to avoid any delays or issues at security. If you are not checking a bag, here’s everything you need to know about carrying liquids in a carry-on.
Some simple packing tips can also help speed up the security process.
- Wear shoes that are easy to take off and put on – also wear socks for hygiene.
- Keep liquids under 3.4 ounces in a clear bag
- Place your liquids in a clear, quart-sized bag and keep it easily accessible in your carry-on luggage.
- Avoid wearing belts with metal buckles or heavy jewelry – these will need to be removed during screening.
- Pack electronics, computers, tablets, and other small items in an easily accessible place.
- Organize Your Personal Items for Efficiency – Pack your essentials so that you can access them quickly during security checks. This includes your identification, boarding pass, etc.
Dressing for Success: Comfort and Efficiency
The clothing you choose for your travel day can make a significant difference in your comfort and efficiency.
The Importance of Comfortable Attire
Choose clothing that allows freedom of movement and is appropriate for the climate at your destination. Avoid clothing that wrinkles easily or requires extensive accessories.
Wool clothing is a great option for both comfort and practicality. It is lightweight, breathable, wrinkle-resistant, and can keep you warm in colder temperatures and cool in warm temperatures.
Three wool brands I love to travel in include:
- Woolx – I like their range of colors
- Wool& – Love their dresses and their 100-day challenge
- Unbound Merino – Great for lightweight layers
Layers: The Key to Staying Comfortable During Travel
Airports and airplanes can have varying temperatures, so dressing in layers allows you to adjust to your comfort level. Plus, if you’re traveling from a cold climate to a warm one, you’ll be able to remove layers as needed before boarding the plane.
The Convenience of Slip-On Shoes:
Wearing shoes that are easy to slip on and off can save time when going through security. Avoid footwear with laces or intricate buckles. It also bears repeating that you should wear socks for hygiene. Do you really want to walk barefoot through a security lane?
The shoes I am traveling with most these days are these:
- Sanuk Donna Loafer – sole of a sandal and super comfortable
- Kizik Prague Canvas Sneaker – best sneaker we’ve tried for slip-slip-off ease
- Sanuk Shaka Lite – cute canvas loafer
- Doc Marten’s short boots – all great classic for fall/winter
How Early Can You Go Through Security?
The short answer is as early as you want. But as stated above, the general rule of thumb based on historical data is to arrive two hours before a domestic flight out of a major airport and three hours before an international flight. It’s better to arrive early rather than late.
However, if you are flying out of a smaller regional airport or know that the particular airport you are departing from is typically not very busy, then you may be able to go through security earlier. It’s always best to check with the airline or the airport’s website for specific guidelines and recommendations.
In general, it is recommended to arrive at least an hour before your flight if you have TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, as these expedited security programs allow for a faster and smoother screening process.
If you do happen to arrive too early for your flight, most airports in the United States have amenities that can help pass the time such as restaurants, an airport lounge, and duty-free shops. So take the time to explore and enjoy your airport experience.
Exploring the Terminal: Making the Most of Your Time
If you find yourself with extra time before your flight, use it wisely.
Tips for Spending Extra Time in the Terminal
Instead of sitting and waiting, explore the terminal. Many airports have art installations, relaxation areas, and even mini-museums to discover.
Trying New Restaurants and Experiencing Airport Amenities
Take advantage of your time to try a new restaurant or café. Many airports now offer diverse culinary experiences, from local cuisine to international flavors.
Last-Minute Shopping for Travel Essentials
Use your time to shop for any last-minute travel essentials or souvenirs. Airport shops often feature unique products you won’t find elsewhere.
How Early Does Flight Board?
For domestic flights, flights generally start the boarding process a minimum of 30 minutes prior to departure. Once the boarding process is complete, the door will be closed and you will not be able to board your flight.
For international flights, the boarding process can be quite complicated. It usually begins a full hour prior to departure.
As you embark on your next journey, remember that navigating the airport arrival and security process doesn’t have to be a source of stress. By following these tips and strategies, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable start to your travels. Whether you’re an experienced traveler or a first-time flyer, the goal is the same: explore the skies, not the queues. Travel with confidence and savor every moment of your adventure. Safe travels!
