How to Create and Preserve Memories of a Trip?
If you’re like most people, long road trips and family vacations always end with wonderful memories worth cherishing. After experiencing the unique scenery and engaging in exciting conversations, it’s heartbreaking to think about those memories fading away.
Fortunately, there are creative ways to keep your memories alive and share them with family and friends. In this post, we’ll explore some of the best methods for preserving those lasting moments of your road trip adventure so you can enjoy them again and again.
Take a Ton of Photos and Videos
Taking pictures and recording videos is one of the best ways to capture travel memories. Photos will help you remember the details of that Girls Trip to Aruba or Rovaniemi Dog Sledding, while videos allow you to record conversations, experiences, and fun moments.
Pictures I have taken while on vacation with my family:
- Group photos of the whole family
- Scenic landscapes and landmarks
- Personal selfies in interesting locations
- Photos with locals or other travelers you meet on your trip
- Street art or unique architecture around the destination
- Food you try throughout your travels
- Action shots of any activities or attractions you visit
- Creative angles, such as aerial shots from a drone camera or underwater images from snorkeling trips like this from St. Lucia
- Capturing travel quotes and inspirational messages written on buildings, walls, etc
- Fun poses with props like sunglasses, hats, souvenirs, etc
- Videos of “My favorite thing about today was……”
- Videos of things or events we found funny
One of the most rewarding travel experiences we have experienced is giving our children their own digital cameras and/or cell phones with quality cameras and allowing them to capture their own travel memories. Not only does it provide a fun activity for them to enjoy, but it also gives them the opportunity to look back on the trip from a unique perspective. It’s amazing the things I have missed on a vacation that they saw and captured. Honestly, some of my favorite travel pictures, like the one below from a trip to Galveston, are ones my kids took.
Note: If you have younger children, you can find low-cost digital cameras under $35 designed for young children (3+) that take a lot of abuse from accidental falls and still produce quality images.
Create a Photobook
Taking photos is one of the most enjoyable and effective ways to capture your road trip memories. Whether you use a digital camera, smartphone, or tablet, having physical copies of those images will make it easier to look back into the past. And by creating a photobook that displays all your favorite photos from the journey, you can easily share them with friends and family.
You can use an online photo printing service to create a beautiful photo book that you can proudly display on your coffee table. A custom photobook project to capture life’s special moments with Mixbook is a great way to make sure your memories live on in the physical world. The easy-to-use design software lets you get creative and create the perfect photo book in various sizes, styles, colors, and more.
Make A Scrapbook
Scrapbooking is an enjoyable craft that allows you to be as creative as you like while preserving all your road trip memories in one place. By collecting memorabilia such as ticket stubs, maps, souvenirs, and postcards, you can create a unique scrapbook that is a physical reminder of your journey.
You can also add handwritten notes, journal entries, and quotes to make it even more personal. You can customize each page with stickers, stamps, washi tape, and other artsy items. If you’re feeling creative, you can try your hand at creating custom-made scrapbook pages.
For an even more creative take on the scrapbook, make a mini-album that you can store in your purse or pocket. Smaller albums are perfect for instantly showing off your road trip memories to family and friends.
Start a Travel Journal
You may already have experience keeping a journal, in which case you can use the same technique to document your road trip. Journaling lets you capture your journey’s big and small moments, from glorious landscapes to funny conversations. I find this easier than scrapbooking, since all you need is a pen and notebook.
From the nice restaurants you visited and the silly things you did. You can also use your journal to capture the emotions and feelings that come with being on the road and any philosophical insights or lessons you learn along the way.
Writing down whatever comes to mind will help bring back memories more clearly when revisiting your notes. You can even make travel journaling more creative by including drawings, sketches, and photographs. You can also write down travel tips or what you learned from the trip – this will be especially helpful if you plan on revisiting the same place again. A travel journal is a great way to process and reflect on your experiences. And with the wide variety of notebooks, journals, and planners available nowadays, you can easily find one that suits your taste and style.
Note: I use the Midori Travelers Company Traveler Notebook (regular size) with a lined paper insert for planning and journaling, blank paper insert for drawing and sketching, and zippered pouch for storing travel documents, tickets, and other items.
Send Yourself Postcards
Another great travel memory-keeper is postcards. Not only are they an easy, affordable way to document your trip, but you can also send them to friends and family for a special surprise in the mail!
You can buy postcards wherever you travel and write down your experiences on the back – from funny stories to useful travel tips. Or, if you want to get creative, why not make your own postcards with photos or drawings? If you don’t have the time (or supplies) to make them yourself, there are plenty of online services that allow you to customize and print travel postcards.
Choose Special Souvenirs or Keepsakes
Souvenirs are a great way to remember your travel experiences, and you can find them almost anywhere. When on the road, look for souvenirs that are meaningful and remind you of the places you’ve been. It could be something small, something more special, or even something you made yourself while taking a class or workshop.
Some of the things I’ve collected over the years have been:
- Postcards
- Travel mugs
- Magnets
- Cookbooks with recipes specific to a region or destination – when in Alaska, I bought The Alaska from Scratch Cookbook
- Keychain in the shape of a local landmark
- Keychain with engraved tokens for every place you’ve been – Wander Club
- Pressed pennies or souvenir coins
- Vinyl stickers for my water bottle
- Christmas ornaments
- Jewelry
- Clothing
If you don’t want to buy something, why not create a travel jar and collect small items like hotel key cards, shells from the beach, or small amounts of currency or coins you collected as you travel? These items may not be expensive, but they will take up less space and travel better than bulky souvenirs.
Create a Keepsake Box
If you don’t have the patience or skill for scrapbooking, travel journaling, or shopping for souvenirs and keepsakes, why not create a travel keepsake box? Simply purchase a decorative storage box and fill it up with travel memories like ticket stubs, postcards, maps, and photos.
Start A Travel Blog
If you love putting pen to paper, writing a travelog is the perfect way to document your road trip memories. Travel writing is an art form that allows you to chronicle the journey in vivid detail, from the sights and sounds of new places to the people you meet along the way. You can also add personal reflections and anecdotes about what made each experience special.
The best part about creating a travelog is that you can do it in whatever style and format best suits your personality. You could go the traditional route and write everything out by hand or use a computer to help organize your thoughts. Or, if you prefer visual storytelling, try making an illustrated journal with drawings and sketches of the places you visited.
Record A Podcast
Podcasting is an increasingly popular medium that allows you to share stories and perspectives with a broad audience. Recording a podcast about your road trip or family vacation is an excellent way to preserve memories and share them with the world. Here are some popular travel podcasts you can start listening to.
You can use a recording device or smartphone app to capture audio of your conversations and reflections along the way. Once you have all the recordings ready, you’ll need to decide what type of show format you want: solo host, interview style, or a combination of both. Then you can upload the podcast online and start sharing your road trip memories with friends, family, and anyone interested in hearing about it.
Put Together a Video Montage
Creating a short video montage is the way to go if you want to bring your road trip memories to life. With all the photos and videos you captured along the way, you can quickly assemble them into an entertaining and visually stunning presentation.
You’ll need some basic video editing skills to get the job done, but there are plenty of tutorials online to help you out. It’s also helpful to pick a theme or concept before getting started–this will give the video montage some structure and make it easier to put everything together. Once you’ve finished editing, you can upload your masterpiece to YouTube or another video-sharing site so everyone can enjoy your road trip memories.
Create a Pushpin Map
Creating a travel pushpin map is an easy way to document and remember your travels. It’s also a great way to plan for future trips and share travel memories with others.
There are many pushpin travel map versions available to purchase, but you can also create your own map, you just need a few supplies. The first is a map; you can either use a physical map or an online map you print out. You can attach this directly to the wall or place it on a cork bulletin board that’s about the same size. Next, you’ll need some travel-themed pushpins and some travel memories to add to the map. Once you have everything ready, simply attach the travel memories (like ticket stubs or postcards) to each pin and place them on the map in order of travel.
Some Final Thoughts
Preserving your road trip memories is a complicated process, but with a few simple tools, you can easily create lasting keepsakes of the journey. Whether it’s a scrapbook, travelog, podcast, video montage, or journal, there are plenty of ways to ensure that your experiences stay with you even long after the trip.
