Embracing Québec City’s Winter Atmosphere
Visiting Québec City is like stepping into a postcard-worthy scene with a winter ambiance like no other. Snow-capped rooftops on historic buildings, the historic Dufferin Terrace along the ice-capped St. Lawrence River, and relax at an outdoor warming station or warm up with a cup of hot coffee at one of the many cozy cafes, all make for an unforgettable experience.
Québec City is rich in history and culture, making it the perfect destination for families looking to learn while having fun. The historic Old Québec is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the only remaining walled city in Canada or the United States.
Québec City may seem like an ideal romantic getaway destination, but it also offers plenty of family-friendly activities. Bring your teenagers and older children along for a unique winter vacation they won’t forget. Not only will they love the magical atmosphere of Québec City in winter, but there are also plenty of exciting outdoor activities and indoor attractions to keep them entertained.
When is the Best Time to Visit Québec City?
During the Carnaval de Québec, the city’s festive spirit reaches its peak and this is one of the best times to visit the city. Running from late January to mid-February, the winter carnival features a wide variety of activities from viewing breathtaking ice sculptures and lively parades to nightly entertainment and ice canoe racing.
In 2024, Carnaval de Québec celebrated its 70th year anniversary as the largest and longest running winter carnival in the world.
Family-Friendly Winter Activities in Québec City
Aside from the Québec winter carnival, there are also plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy during the colder months in Québec City. Let’s start here with fun outdoor activities, then head indoors, before ending with a few of our favorite indoor activities.
Nordic Skiing on the Plains of Abraham
Strap on skis and set off for some cross-country skiing through the tranquil landscapes of the Plains of Abraham. This expansive urban park transforms into a winter wonderland during the colder months, offering families the opportunity to explore its winding trails and open spaces blanketed in snow.
As you trek over 14 km of groomed trails with your teenagers, you can take in stunning views of the city and the St. Lawrence River. Trails are laid out for beginner, intermediate and expert skiers. Access to the trails is free and equipment rentals are available at the skaters’ chalet at the Plains of Abraham Skating Rink.
Other Things to Do on the Plains of Abraham
You can also hike and snowshoe along these trails or ice skate at the Plains of Abraham Skating Rink (free of charge). Skate rentals are available at the rink’s chalet. If you want to go sledding, there are two sliding areas behind the Plains of Abraham Museum. Sledding equipment rentals are available at the museum’s reception desk.
Ice Skating at Place d’Youville
Lace-up your skates and glide across the ice at Place d’Youville, a bustling square in the heart of Old Québec. During winter Carnival, this historic plaza transforms into a lively outdoor rink, where families can join locals and visitors alike in the time-honored tradition of ice skating.
With the majestic façade of the Palais Montcalm as your backdrop and the festive atmosphere of Carnaval all around, it’s an experience that’s as exhilarating as it is enchanting.
Tobogganing at Terrasse Dufferin
Experience the thrill of tobogganing down the Au 1884, the iconic slide at Dufferin Terrace overlooking the majestic St. Lawrence River. This historic boardwalk stretches along the cliffside beneath the iconic Fairmont Le Château Frontenac and offers families the perfect opportunity for some high-speed fun in the snow.
Grab a sled and race down the toboggan slide icy tracks together, with the wind in your faces and the stunning panorama of Old Québec as your backdrop. You can reach speeds up to 70 km/h or 43.5 mph. With its panoramic views and exhilarating thrills, tobogganing at Terrasse Dufferin is a must-do activity for families seeking an unforgettable winter adventure in Québec City. Plus at only $4 Canadian ($3 USD) per ride, it’s a bargain!
Visit at Hôtel de Glace
Step into a winter wonderland at the only Ice Hotel in North America, where every room is a masterpiece of ice and snow. This architectural marvel, located about a 40-minute drive outside the city center, offers families the chance to marvel at intricate ice sculptures, sip on frosty cocktails at the ice bar, slide down an ice slide, and even spend a night in a cozy frozen accommodation.
Day passes are available (via Get Your Guide) for you to explore the hotel’s stunning ice-carved corridors and themed suites, each more enchanting than the last. This is the option I took when I visited. The pass grants you access to the hotel’s public areas, including a stunning ice chapel, the themed ice hotel rooms, the ice bar, and the outdoor terrace with a warming station.
Be sure to don your best cold-weather gear to tour here. I found I was colder inside the hotel with its low humidity than when I was on the parade route for the carnival parade. Be sure to also stop by the small on-site museum to learn about the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into creating this ephemeral masterpiece. It’s really interesting to see the picture of the giant ice molds used to construct this ice hotel year after year.
Whether you’re spending the night or just stopping by for a visit, the Ice Hotel is sure to leave your teenagers in awe and inspire their sense of wonder. Plus, it’s located at the Village Vacances Valcartier, the largest winter playground in North America, with over 30 snow slides, snow rafting, and Bora Parc (an indoor water park).
Note: If you are in the city during the Christmas holidays, be sure to make plans to visit the Québec City German Christmas Market in the heart of the city, where you can indulge in traditional holiday treats and enjoy festive performances and decorations.
Participate in Winter Carnival
Immerse yourselves in the excitement of Québec City’s Winter Carnival, a beloved tradition that dates back over a century. This iconic festival, held annually in late January to early February, brings the city to life with parades, ice canoe races, and outdoor games galore.
Families with teenagers will delight in the festive atmosphere, as the streets are filled with music, laughter, and the irresistible scent of maple taffy. Don your best winter gear and join in the fun.

My First Winter Carnival (2024)
As a seasoned family traveler, I’ve had the privilege of exploring some of the world’s most captivating destinations. However, none have left quite the impression as this city during winter Carnival.
Recently, a friend and I embarked on an adventure to this enchanting city, and the experience surpassed all my expectations. I have been to Québec City before during springtime, but seeing it transformed into a winter wonderland was truly magical.
The iconic Bonhomme actually greeted us at the airport (well his statute did anyway) with his warm smile and jolly spirit, setting the tone for what was to come. I found the chill in the air matched only by the warmth and joy of exploration offered by Québec City’s winter festivities. From trying maple taffy on snow and wandering through Bonhomme’s 2 story ice castle to viewing all the ice sculptures around town, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
One of the highlights for me was attending the night parade on lower town. There are actually two parades, one each Saturday during Carnival held first in the lower town and then the next week in the upper town.
I bundled up in my warmest winter gear, took a taxi from my hotel, and joined in with the crowds of excited festival goers. The lively music, colorful floats, and costumes all added to the festive atmosphere. Afterwards, I headed back to the main festival grounds for a free concert.
Exploring Québec City with a Guided Tours
In addition to the thrilling outdoor adventures and festive activities, exploring Québec City with a guided tour offers families a deeper understanding of the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.
During my visits, I had the opportunity to embark on two distinct guided tours, each offering a unique perspective on this charming destination.
Chocolate-Themed Food Tour
During our last trip to Québec City, I indulged in a delectable chocolate-themed food tour that took us on a culinary journey through the city’s sweetest spots and the Chocolate Museum. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we sampled an array of decadent chocolates and confections, learning about the art of chocolate making and the city’s vibrant culinary scene along the way.
From artisanal chocolatiers to quaint patisseries, each stop on the tour offered a tantalizing glimpse into Québec City’s rich gastronomic heritage. With teenagers with a sweet tooth, this tour was a hit, allowing us to satisfy our cravings while also exploring the city’s charming neighborhoods and hidden gems.
Walking History Tour of Old Québec and Quartier Petit Champlain
This time around, I opted for a history tour that delved into the fascinating stories and landmarks of Old Québec and included a ride on the funicular between the upper town and lower town. Led by our guide Carol of HQ Services Touristiques, a woman-owned tourism company, we wandered through cobblestone streets lined with centuries-old buildings, soaking in the architectural beauty and storied past of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From the imposing walls of the Citadel and the ornately decorated chapel inside the Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica Cathedral to the charming boutiques and cafes of Quartier Petit Champlain, each stop on the tour offered insights into Québec City’s rich history and cultural diversity. With teenagers eager to learn about the city’s past, this tour provided a captivating glimpse into Québec’s storied past and vibrant present.

Guided tours offer families a convenient and engaging way to explore Québec City’s top attractions and hidden gems while providing valuable insights from knowledgeable locals. Whether you’re sampling sweet treats on a chocolate-themed food tour or delving into the city’s history on a guided walking tour, these experiences are sure to enrich your family’s visit to Québec City and create lasting memories for years to come.
Indoor Activities in Québec City
While Québec City’s winter wonderland offers plenty of outdoor adventures, there are also many indoor activities that provide respite from the cold while still immersing families in the city’s rich culture and history. One such activity that we thoroughly enjoyed during our visit was touring the Augustinian Monastery.
Touring Le Monastère des Augustines
Step back in time and explore the fascinating history of Québec City and the Augustinian nuns who founded the first hospital in North America. The Monastery is now a UNESCO-recognized wellness resort with a social mission to provide care for those who care for others.
Self-guided tours of the monastery provide insight into the daily life of the sisters, their contributions to medicine, and the architectural significance of the building itself. For those who appreciate art, the monastery is home to 15 original paintings from the 1600 and 1700s that were saved during the French Revolution.
For more rest and relaxation, you can spend the night at the monastery in a simple single room like those the sisters would have stayed in with a communal bath or in a modern king room with a private bath on the contemporary floor. Either way, its tranquil atmosphere will ensure to enjoy some relax and relaxation while onsite.
Also, be sure to dine at the on-site Le Vivoir restaurant for a quiet breakfast or healthy dinner served buffet style. Working with local producers, the fare here is not only sustainable but healthy.
Exploring Museums and Art Galleries
Québec City is home to a wealth of museums and art galleries that showcase the city’s vibrant arts and culture scene. Families with teenagers can spend hours exploring institutions such as the Musée de la Civilisation, which offers interactive exhibits on Québec’s history and identity, or the Musée National des Beaux-arts du Québec, which houses a diverse collection of Canadian and international art. Art lovers will also appreciate the many galleries scattered throughout Old Québec, where they can admire works by local and renowned artists alike.
No visit to Québec City would be complete without a stop at the iconic Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, the city’s most photographed hotel. This majestic hotel, built in the late 19th century, is not only a National Historic Site of Canada but also an architectural masterpiece. On its first floor, there is a small free exhibit that showcases the hotel’s rich past and its famous guests, including royalty and celebrities. Visitors can also take a guided tour of the hotel to learn more about its history and see stunning views of the city.
Day Trips for Outdoor Adventure:
Explore Jacques Cartier National Park
Venture about 30 minutes beyond the city and explore the winter wilderness of Jacques Cartier National Park. With teenagers by your side, marvel at the sites in this beautiful glacial valley that features frozen waterfalls and over 50km of trails.
The park offers fat tire bikes and snowshoes for rent, making it easy for families with teenagers to try out this exciting activity together. With varying levels of difficulty, these trails are suitable for both beginners and experienced riders.
Dog Sledding at Pourvoirie du Lac-Beauport
Feel the thrill of mushing through snow-covered forests with a dog sledding adventure at Pourvoirie du Lac-Beauport. This family-friendly activity allows teenagers to experience the joy of being pulled by a team of friendly and energetic dogs.
I opted for the introductory experience, where we learned the basics of dog sledding and then had the chance to mush our own team through scenic trails. It was an unforgettable experience as we glided through the winter wonderland, surrounded by majestic trees and snow-capped mountains.
For teenagers who are animal lovers, this is a must-try activity. They will not only have fun but also learn about the care and training of sled dogs from knowledgeable guides. A highlight for me was getting to see the nursery and all the cute puppies.
Learn About Indigenous Traditions in Wendake
Wendake, an indigenous community just 15 minutes outside of the city, is a great place for a day trip or plan an overnight stay to learn about their traditions and way of life.
One of the must-see attractions in Wendake is the Ekionkiestha’ National Longhouse. This traditional longhouse is a replica of those used by the Huron-Wendat people hundreds of years ago. Step inside and be transported back in time as you learn from knowledgeable guides about the customs, ceremonies, and beliefs of this indigenous community.
Walk Through the Onhwa’ Lumina Night Walk
The Onhwa’ Lumina is an immersive multimedia experience that guides visitors through the mystical forest and learns about the history, legends, and spiritual significance to the community. This 1.2-kilometer trail is illuminated with stunning light and sound installations, creating a truly magical atmosphere.
This experience is not to be missed, especially for those interested in learning more about the Huron-Wendat culture and their legends.
Experience Indigenous Cuisine at La Traite Restaurant
Wendake is also known for its exceptional indigenous cuisine, and there’s no better place to try it than at La Traite Restaurant of Hôtel-Musée Premières Nations. Their menu features traditional dishes made with locally sourced ingredients from the surrounding forests and rivers.
Practical Tips for Family Travel in Québec City
- Before embarking on your winter adventure, be sure to dress warmly and prepare for the cold weather. Dress in layers, including a warm coat, hat, gloves, and waterproof boots. I found my wool long-sleeved shorts and leggings from wool to be great insulating base layers. The new Aurora Heat natural hand warmers made from beaver pelt did better than my USB-powered hand warmers. Get your own here and save 10% when you use code: OURLITTLEFAMILYADVENTURE.
- It’s also helpful to do some research beforehand and plan your activities accordingly, as some attractions may have limited hours or be closed during the winter season.
- Accommodations book quickly during the winter carnival dates. Book ahead of time and consider booking one of the smaller boutique hotels near the carnival site. I stayed at Hôtel Le Manoir d’Auteuil which was just outside the walled city and was an easy walk to the carnival area, Old Québec city area, and had access to covered underground parking.
- The conversion from Canadian dollars to US dollars is favorable for Americans at a ratio of 4:3. This means that your money will go further during your visit.
- The main attraction of the carnival is the ice sculptures. These magnificent works of art are created by talented sculptors from all over the world using special tools like chainsaws and chisels. Make sure to take plenty of photos and appreciate these temporary masterpieces.
- The carnival also has an extensive food scene with traditional Québecois dishes like poutine and tourtiere, as well as unique winter treats like maple taffy on snow. Don’t be afraid to try something new and indulge in some delicious local cuisine.
Québec City’s winter wonderland is a treasure trove of family-friendly activities and shared experiences that will leave a lasting impression on teenagers and parents alike. Whether you’re exploring the city’s historic streets or embarking on outdoor adventures in the surrounding wilderness, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this enchanting winter destination. So bundle up, embrace the chill, and create memories that will warm your hearts for years to come.
