10 ft Power Strip Surge Protector

Dorm rooms are not typically equipped with an abundance of outlets, and those available are not always conveniently located. Invest in a power strip that has multiple outlets to power all the necessary electronics.

Larry Snider, VP of Operations of Redwood Vacation Rentals and father of a college sophomore recommends "a surge protector power strip as it can protect expensive electronic devices from potential damage caused by voltage spikes or electrical storms. This small investment could save them from the high costs of replacing damaged electronics."

TOTANKI 25" Rolling Slim Laundry Basket

Laundry can pile up quickly in college, and having a laundry basket makes it easier to keep it organized. Choose a basket that's easy to carry.

This slim laundry basket with wheels is ideal for a college dorm room or other small space. This basket is 25" tall and only 7.8" wide making it easy to slide into the tightest of spaces. The durable construction and reinforced handle mean you can trust it to take your laundry back and forth to the laundry facilities.

SIMBOOM Bedside Caddy Bag

You can never rely on your dorm room to have enough storage or for the shelves to be deep enough. This Beside Caddy is perfect for creating more storage space without taking up too much real estate. The adjustable shelving allows you store items of all different shapes and sizes. It's also great for mounting devices like a mini-fridge, printer, or TV.

Tamara Gruber, owner of YourTimetoFly.com created this packing list for guys. She said that her daughter, "really liked having a bedside organizer that slid under the mattress and offered pockets for storage of things like her journal, whatever book she was reading, lip balm, hand cream, tissues, and chargers. The nightstand provided by her school didn’t have drawers so didn’t offer much in the way of easy to access from the bed storage."

College can be an exciting yet challenging time for college-bound students and their parents. However, with proper preparation, the transition can be comfortable and enjoyable. Our printable college dorm checklist can help ensure that your child has everything they need for a successful college experience.

Use this handy college packing list for girls and guys to make sure you have everything you need (and don’t forget anything). Remember these are just suggestions so make sure to include items you know your college student will need and actually use.

What clothes to pack for college?

When it comes to packing clothes for college, think about the climate and how often you’ll need to do laundry. It’s best to bring a mix of items, from everyday t-shirts and jeans to more formal attire for special occasions.

A dorm packing list for girls will be different than a dorm packing list for guys when it comes to packing clothes for college, but the basics remain the same. The best advice I have ever heard on how much to pack is to only bring what you love and know you’ll wear. Then be prepared to do laundry often.

Be sure to include:

  • Workout clothes
  • Underwear
  • Pajamas
  • Shorts / long pants / jeans
  • Short sleeves shirts/tees
  • Long sleeve shirts
  • Sweatshirts/sweaters
  • Socks
  • Shoes (sneakers, flip flops, dress shoes)
  • Rain Gear (umbrella, raincoat, boots)

If your student is attending school in a different climate, they’ll probably want to pack some light layers as well. Also make sure you have a few cooler-weather items if your student finds themselves in a climate that has cold weather.

In conclusion

Remember that less is MORE! Your college student will need to fit all of their college essentials into a small space so make sure to pack and only ship the most necessary items. You can also buy online and pick up in-store near the campus. Then at the end of the school year, everything has to be packed up and taken more or stored for the following year.
