You know, s’mores are a HUGE part of a family camping trip. But there are so many other camping desserts that are super easy to make too! You can cook practically anything on a campfire, even bake a cake. The next time you go camping, you have got to try this Chocolate Orange Cake. It will be a HUGE hit with your campers.
Chocolate Cake in an Orange
This is a really easy recipe to follow, and it tastes wonderful! I mean, what’s not to love about cake, chocolate, and oranges? The chocolate orange cake recipe itself is actually the mug cake we make at home all the time. It takes just a few minutes to mix together and bake. At home, we microwave it inside a coffee mug for 90 seconds, but when camping, we pour the batter into hollowed-out oranges, wrap it in foil, and bake directly over coals. When baking over medium heat coals, it takes about 10 minutes.

The best part of the whole chocolate orange campfire cake is that it tastes so good! You can just serve your oranges as-is. We like to eat them with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra special treat that first night. We’ve even sprinkled cinnamon on top before serving. The oranges also store well, so you can save one in the cooler to be enjoyed later.
Chocolate Orange Cake Ingredients
This chocolate orange campfire cake is such an easy dessert to make while camping! You only need a few simple ingredients and a campfire.
- large orange
- all-purpose flour
- cane sugar
- cocoa powder
- baking powder
- salt
- oil (any cooking will do but I like olive or avocado oil)
- water or orange juice
- chocolate chips
- heavy-duty aluminum foil
- optional – ice cream or whipped cream
How to Bake a Cake in an Orange
- Cut the tops of the oranges off and set them aside.
2. Scoop out the orange while leaving the skin intact and reserve the juice. (I find a grapefruit spoon works really well to do this.)
3. Mix all the dry ingredients and chocolate chips together in a bowl.
4. Add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix them well with a spoon or fork.
5. Fill the oranges with cake batter until they are about 3/4 to the top.
6. Place the lids on top of each orange and wrap it with heavy-duty aluminum foil.
7. Set wrapped oranges, cut side up, in the campfire coals, and cook until done (about 10 minutes). If you want to be sure they are done, stick a knife in one and see if it comes out clean! If not done, cook the cake for a few more minutes.
8. Remove from coals and allow to cool. Serve warm.
Note: You can prepare the oranges and the batter the day before we leave for our trip. Then assemble and bake on site. If you want to serve with ice cream, you can keep it cold inside a Yeti Growler or Stanley Insulated Food Jar.
