Midtowner – College-Themed Diner
Let’s start our culinary journey with a popular breakfast spot. Midtowner is a delightful eatery known for its welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. Located in The District at Midtown, it’s conveniently across from Hotel Indigo and the University of Southern Mississippi campus. This diner pays homage to its college setting with a fun, collegiate-themed décor.
As a Robert St. John concept restaurant, this diner is known for its laid-back vibe and delicious comfort food. From pancakes and omelets to sandwiches and salads, Midtowner offers an extensive breakfast menu that will surely satisfy your cravings. Their motto “Real Breakfast, Real Lunch, Real Local” speaks to their commitment to using fresh, local ingredients in all of their dishes.
A must-try is their Southern Sampler with cathead biscuit topped with fried ham, country-style sausage gravy, and fried eggs. As a side, try the spicy hashbrowns that are cooked on the flattop with buffalo sauce for a nice kick. Another thing to try is their Hot Honey Chicken and Waffle.
Weekend brunch is popular here is extremely popular, so be prepared for a wait. But trust us, it’s worth it.

Depot Kitchen & Market
For a farm-to-table experience that captures the essence of Hattiesburg’s culinary scene, Depot Kitchen & Market is a must-visit. Plus they have the reputation of having some of the best coffee in town.
Open for breakfast and lunch, this cozy restaurant is tucked away in the downtown area with a lovely outdoor patio space. Their menu boasts familiar Southern ingredients with a twist, like Grits and Greens breakfast with smoked gouda grits, braised greens, and poached eggs. Another popular one is their Croissant French Toast cooked in vanilla custard. My friend Melody at Where I am Roam loves Bru’s Breakfast Bowl – a cheddar biscuit, topped with bacon, egg, more cheese, and sausage gravy.
For lunch, you will want to try the Mortadella Grilled Sandwich with thick slices of mortadella topped with peppers, remoulade, pistachio pesto, and provolone. This is one of the best-grilled sandwiches I’ve had this year. For a healthier option, I also recommend the Depot Chop loaded with pepperoncini, salami, olives, and artichoke hearts.
The Market is the accompanying store where you can purchase locally-made items and ingredients used in the restaurant.

Southern Prohibition Brewery
Southern Prohibition Brewery is the place to go for craft beer enthusiasts. This local brewery takes pride in its dedication to crafting quality brews. Try their seasonal IPA; it’s a flavor-packed experience. Crowd Control and Devils Harvest are also top picks.
And don’t worry if you’re not a beer fan – they also have non-alcoholic options available and a full kitchen whipping up tasty pub grub including local favorites like the Obligatory Giant Brewery Pretzel and Fried Chicken Sandwich.
Yet, it’s SoPro’s twisted takes on dishes like the Boudin Egg Rolls with collard greens and the Poutine topped with shredded pot roast that steal the show.
301 Mobile St. Hattiesburg
Coney Island Café
Stepping into Coney Island Café is like taking a step back in time. This iconic diner is a piece of Hattiesburg’s history celebrating 100 years in business (2023). Started as a fruit stand by Arthur Fokakis in 1923, he eventually built the building in downtown Hattiesburg. Today it is run by a fourth-generation Fokakis.
Step inside and you’ll be greeted by friendly staff and an old-school diner counter with booths lining the walls. The all-day menu features classic diner fare like breakfast plates with eggs and toast, burgers, chili dogs, hot dogs, sandwiches, and po-boys. Be sure to bring cash as they do not accept credit or debit cards.
I highly recommend the cheeseburger here – it’s a classic done right. And don’t forget to a side of curly fries, the perfect combination. For a true challenge, try your hand at the Coney Killer Challenge – a massive burger topped with chili, cheese, and bacon served with fries. Finish it in 30 minutes or less and get your name on the wall of fame.
400 N Main St, Hattiesburg
Birdhouse Café
Birdhouse Café, with its welcoming atmosphere, is the perfect spot for a healthy breakfast with Southern ingredients or just a place to grab a cup of fresh juice or coffee and a pastry. Owner Chef Katie Dixon, a Masterchef finalist and Food Network Star competitor is dedicated to sourcing local ingredients for her dishes.
Their menu offers plenty of healthy options to start your day including fresh juices, smoothies, smoothie or savory bowls, and toasts. There are great vegetarian options like the Grave Digger’s Daughter Smoothie Bowl with acai, spinach banana, and protein powder (plant-based).
I highly recommend trying The Dillon nourishing bowl with sauteed spinach, quinoa patty, fried egg, mushrooms, and roasted red peppers. All the flavors blend together for a perfect healthy breakfast.
Note: The Hattiesburg’s location is in one half of an appliance store. So don’t be alarmed when you pull up to see the cafe.

Royal Spices
If you’re looking for a unique dining experience in Hattiesburg, look no further than Royal Spices. Situated in an unassuming building along the Longleaf Trace, this fast-casual restaurant offers upscale cuisine with outdoor seating available.
What started as a catering company and food truck has become a popular dining spot for locals and visitors alike. The menu features dishes inspired by Indian, Mediterranean, and Southern cuisine using fresh ingredients and bold flavors.
A must-try is their famous Royal Spices Main Street Fried Chicken Dinner with a choice of two sides. I really enjoyed the fried okra and fries, but creole pasta is highly recommended by locals. The Applewood Bacon Burger is also a popular choice with its homemade bacon jam. Other popular dishes are the Royal Spices Creole Pasta with creole alfredo and the Royal Spices Lamp Chops (dinner menu).
Note: When dining at Royal Spices, be sure to place your order at the outdoor window and wait for your food outside. You can enjoy your meal on their covered patio or take it home with you. This unique experience adds to the charm of this restaurant and allows for a more relaxed atmosphere while enjoying their delicious dishes.
It’s also perfect if you are cycling on the Trace as you can park your bike, eat, and get back on the trail. There’s also a snowcone shop next door to cool off after your meal or while you wait.

Smith Drug Co.
The Hub City has plenty of options for food and drinks, but one unique spot that should not be missed is Smith Drug Co. This historical site was once a working pharmacy with a soda fountain. It was a hub for voter registration for the area during the Civil Rights Era.
Upon entering, you’ll immediately notice the vintage pharmacy decor still intact – from the ceiling and tiled floor to the soda fountain counter. Although no longer operating as a pharmacy, the real treat here is the experience.
Sit at the counter and imagine what it was like when this place was a bustling drug store in the 1950s. Stop by on Saturdays between 12-4 pm for a malt or shake and learn about its history.
Note: Behind Smith Drug Co. stop to view the Generations Strong: Inspiring African Americans of Hattiesburg Commemorative Wall. This 375-foot wall pays tribute to 160 influential African-American people and families in Hattiesburg’s history.

Half Shell Oyster House
Seafood lovers will find a home at Shell Oyster House. Known for its fresh oysters and seafood dishes, this restaurant has become a favorite in Hattiesburg. The interior is elegant, yet welcoming with New Orleans-inspired decor.
The menu offers plenty of options ranging from steaks and traditional seafood dishes like blackened redfish and shrimp and grits to more unique dishes like the Seafood Pot Pie.
Hattiesburg is just one hour from the Gulfport and the Gulf Coast, so all seafood here is fresh and delicious. Their signature dish is definitely the Chargrilled Oysters – a must-try for any first-time visitor. Here they offer 4 versions – Bienville, Rockefeller, Orleans, and Signature Charboil.
When I visited last, I tried the Charbroiled Oysters with garlic herb sauce, which I highly recommend. I also tried Seafood Pasta with crawfish and Gulf shrimp in a creole alfredo sauce, and Bananas Foster Cheesecake with spiced rum sauce. Both are must-tries for anyone with a sweet tooth and who enjoys a little heat with your seafood.
Additionally, Royal Reds, a type of deep-water shrimp caught off the coast of Mississippi and unique to the Gulf Coast region, are also available at Half Shell Oyster House. If you’ve never tried these sweet, succulent shrimp before, this is the perfect place to do so.
Note: Half Shell Oyster House has several locations throughout the South, but their Hattiesburg location is conveniently located in west Hattiesburg, near great shopping and Longleaf Piney Resort.

Roses BBQ
Barbecue is a tradition in Mississippi, and Roses BBQ carries on that legacy with flair. You can’t beat gas station barbecue, and that’s exactly what you’ll find here – a gas station with BBQ pits out front.
Their menu is simple but packed with flavor. Choose from ribs, pulled pork, brisket, chicken, and smoked sausage sandwiches or plates with sides like coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans, and fries. They also have homemade sauces ranging from sweet to spicy to vinegar-based.
This is the perfect place is you want a no-frills, down-home spot. This is a local favorite and often has lines out the door during peak hours. But trust me, it’s worth the wait.
On a recent visit, we ordered ribs with collards and mayo-based potato salad, as well as brisket with fried okra and coleslaw. Both were delicious and reminded me of home-cooked meals. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu here.
Note: Roses BBQ has limited tables indoors or you can order your meal as takeout if you prefer to enjoy their delicious barbecue elsewhere. Don’t forget to grab some homemade sweet tea – it’s the perfect accompaniment to any BBQ meal.

Pop Brothers – Artisan Ice Pop Makers
Lucky Rabbit stands as one of the most sought-after destinations in Hattiesburg. This charming spot plays host to a variety of vintage vendors, making it an ideal treasure trove for unique gifts, home decor, and memorabilia. Nestled between the two buildings lies a fun little park (Pick Nic Park) where you’ll discover Pop Brothers—a skilled artisanal ice pop maker, delighting visitors with their delectable frozen treats.
These artisanal ice pops are made with fresh ingredients and creative flavor combinations. Some popular flavors include Strawberry Lemonade, Jolly Rancher, and Lavender Milk and Honey. They also offer vegan and dairy-free options.
But what really sets them apart is their “adult” pops, made with alcohol for a fun twist on the classic ice pop. They have flavors like Bushwacker, Margarita, and Watermelon Minit Mojito.

Grin Coffee
I love visiting at least one local coffee shop when traveling. Hattiesburg’s coffee culture shines at Grin Coffee. This cozy and inviting coffee shop has a modern yet rustic vibe. You’ll find plenty of seating inside, including comfy couches.
Their drink menu includes classic coffee drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. They are also served as various restaurants around town including The Midtowner, Brass Hat, Crescent City Grill, Ed’s Burger Joint, The Prter, and Keg and Barrel.
Crescent City Grill
For a taste of New Orleans right in Hattiesburg, visit Crescent City Grill. This is another Robert St. John concept restaurant serving up delicious Cajun and Creole dishes.
The menu offers a mix of New Orleans inspired Southern cuisine like gumbo, jambalaya, and po’boys, as well as unique dishes like cajun enchiladas and sloppy roast beef po boy,.
Their Crawfish Étouffée is a flavorful journey to the heart of Cajun and Creole cuisine. It’s a dish that perfectly encapsulates the rich and diverse flavors of this region.
But my favorite dish here is actually an appetizer, the Fried Green Tomatoes with a Creole beurre rouge dipping sauce. This sauce tastes like a blend of butter, garlic, and paprika and pairs perfectly with the crispy tangy green tomatoes. I liked that sauce so much I ordered the catch of the day (mahi) with Tchoupitoulas Topping which is the same base plus crawfish tails, green onions, and mushrooms.
Note: Crescent City Grill also has an extensive wine and cocktail menu, making it a great place for a date night or special occasion.
