How Our Family Funds Travel with the Acorns App

Every family trip starts the same way: someone finds an amazing destination, and then someone else asks how we are going to pay for it. Between sports fees, school trips, and the grocery bill for teenagers, a travel fund can feel like the first thing to go.

I finally stopped relying on willpower and started using the Acorns app instead. Now a small, steady stream of money moves into an investment account without me thinking about it, and that account is how I fund my travel. Right now, it is funding my return to Kazakhstan and Türkiye in fall 2027.

Here is exactly how I set it up, what it costs, and how you can get a $30 bonus when you open a new account.

What is the Acorns app?

Acorns is a micro investing app. That means you invest small amounts of money, often spare change, and Acorns places it in a diversified portfolio of exchange traded funds (ETFs) for you. According to Acorns, its portfolios use ETFs from Vanguard and BlackRock (iShares), and the company handles rebalancing and dividend reinvestment automatically.

You can start acorn investing with as little as $5, and there is no account minimum beyond that first deposit. You do not need to pick stocks or know anything about investing to get started, which is a big reason I like the acorn app for a goal like travel.

How I use acorn investing to fund my travel

My system has two parts that run on autopilot, plus an occasional boost.

1. Round Ups on every purchase

When you link a debit or credit card, Acorns rounds up each purchase to the next dollar and saves the difference. A $3.40 iced mocha latte becomes $4.00, and the extra 60 cents goes toward your investments. Round Ups from an external account are invested once your pending Round Ups reach $5.

Acorns says customers who use Round Ups invest an average of $55 a month from spare change alone. For me, Round Ups are a bonus layer on top of my weekly deposits.

2. Weekly recurring deposits

Round Ups are a nice start, but recurring deposits do the heavy lifting. Acorns lets you automatically invest as little as $5 every day, week, or month. I chose weekly because it feels small in our budget but adds up fast. I started with $25 a week, which works out to roughly $100 a month. I think of it as one nice lunch out each week, and I honestly don’t feel it.

3. One time boosts

When extra money shows up, like a tax refund or a bonus, you can drop part of it into the account. I add extra whenever my monthly budget ends with a surplus. You can make a one time investment at any time.

Get a $30 bonus when you open an Acorns account

New Acorns customers can get a $30 bonus. To qualify, deposit $5 or more and set up a recurring deposit. That is the exact setup I recommend for a travel fund anyway.

How much does the Acorns app cost?

Acorns charges a flat monthly subscription instead of a percentage of your balance. There are no per trade commissions. Here are the current plans, per Acorns:

PlanMonthly costWhat it adds
Bronze$4Invest account with Round Ups and recurring investments, Acorns Later (IRA), Acorns Checking
Silver$8Everything in Bronze, plus a 1% IRA match on new contributions in your first year, Emergency Savings, and extra learning tools
Gold$12Everything in Silver, plus a 3% IRA match in your first year, Custom Portfolios, and Acorns Early accounts and tools for kids

An honest note on fees: Because the fee is flat, it takes a bigger bite out of small balances. On Bronze, $48 a year is 4.8% of a $1,000 balance, but about 0.25% of a $19,200 balance, according to Acorns. That is why I pair Round Ups with weekly deposits. Round Ups alone grow slowly, so steady deposits help the account outgrow the fee.

The ETFs inside your portfolio also carry their own expense ratios, which Acorns says typically range from 0.03% to 0.25%.

Why the acorn app works for families with teens

Planning a family trip on a world map
  • It makes saving visible. Show your teens the balance growing and connect it to a real trip. It turns “we can’t afford that” into “here is our plan.”
  • Everyone can chip in. Teens with summer jobs can contribute toward an experience they want, like a concert trip or a national park they picked.
  • Gold includes tools for kids. The Gold plan adds Acorns Early, which includes custodial investment accounts for kids and a kids’ money app with a debit card and parental controls, per Acorns. It is a natural way to teach teens about investing.
  • It runs without reminders. Busy family schedules are exactly when saving slips. Automation keeps the travel fund growing through soccer season and finals week.

Pros and cons of using Acorns to fund travel

ProsCons
Fully automatic once set upFlat monthly fee is costly on small balances
Start with just $5Investments can lose value, including right before a trip
Spare change adds up without budget painWithdrawals are not instant, so plan ahead
Diversified ETF portfolios, no stock pickingSelling investments at a gain may mean taxes
Gold plan includes tools to teach teensRound Ups alone grow slowly

Important: Investing always carries risk. Acorns states that investment products are not FDIC insured and may lose value. If your trip is only a few months away, consider moving that money to savings early so a market dip does not shrink your vacation budget. Acorns says investments are protected by SIPC up to $500,000 if the brokerage fails, but that does not protect against normal market losses.

How to set up your own Acorns travel fund

  1. Sign up through the bonus link. Open your account here to qualify for the $30 bonus.
  2. Pick a plan. Bronze covers Round Ups and recurring investments. Gold adds the kids’ tools.
  3. Link your checking account and cards. Round Ups come from your primary checking account.
  4. Make your first deposit of $5 or more.
  5. Turn on Round Ups.
  6. Set up a weekly recurring deposit. This also completes the bonus requirement.
  7. Name your goal. Pick a trip and a target amount so the whole family knows what you are saving for.
  8. Check in once a month. Celebrate progress together.
  9. Withdraw early. Request your money a few weeks before final payment is due, since withdrawals take several business days to process.

Acorns travel fund FAQ

Is the acorn app worth it for travel savings?

It can be, if you add recurring deposits. The automation makes saving effortless, but the flat fee means very small balances lose more to fees. Acorns says its flat subscription becomes cost effective above about $5,000.

How much do I need to start acorn investing?

You can start investing with $5, and there is no account minimum beyond that first deposit.

How do I get the $30 Acorns bonus?

New customers who sign up, deposit $5 or more, and set up a recurring deposit qualify. Use my link here.

Is Acorns safe?

Acorns is an SEC registered company, and its brokerage is a member of FINRA and SIPC. Your investments can still lose value with the market.

How long does it take to withdraw money?

Withdrawals take several business days. Check the Acorns Help Center for current timing and plan ahead of your trip deadlines.

Travel does not have to wait for a perfect financial moment. A little spare change and a small weekly deposit can quietly fund my travel, and they can fund yours too. Between my $25 weekly deposits, Round Ups, and extra money from budget surpluses, I’ve earned 6% on my money overall so far. Next stop: Kazakhstan and Türkiye in fall 2027.
