If you are considering visiting the Algarve as a family, in this article you’ll find a 3-day itinerary, perfect if the Algarve is part of a wider European tour or leaving time to plan your own days if you intend on visiting for a week or longer.

Where To Stay In The Algarve

The Algarve spans approximately 5,000 square kilometers, so when it comes to deciding where to stay, it’s fair to say you are spoilt for choice. While this gives you plenty of options in terms of the different resorts, it can be a little overwhelming if you are a first time visitor.

Lagos

Our top pick for where to stay in the Algarve as a family would be Lagos. Staying in Lagos puts you within close proximity of some of the Algarve’s best beaches. Its central location also makes it a good base for day trips, some of which we’ll be recommending as part of our 3 day itinerary. As one of the biggest cities in the Algarve, accommodation options are plentiful and varied, ranging from five star hotels to some of the best family friendly Algarve villas.

Quinta do Lago

Part of the Algarve’s golden triangle, Quinta do Lago is considered one of the most exclusive and premium resorts in the region. It’s probably geared more towards older tourists but would still be a great option if travelling with teenagers who could appreciate the resort’s picturesque cycling routes and championship-standard golf courses.

Albufeira

The Algarve’s liveliest region is Albufeira, but if you are just picturing booze-fueled, party holidays, you are probably underestimating Albufeira. While it does attract more tourists than Lagos, the Old Town still offers an authentic taste of Portugal with a wide range of restaurants and cafes.

Lagos: 3-day Itinerary

Day 1 

Once you’ve checked in, unpacked and got some rest depending on your arrival time, it’s time to explore the Algarve. As mentioned, being based in Lagos means you are surrounded by some fantastic beaches. Start by checking out either Praia Dona Ana or Praia do Camilo, whichever is located closer to your hotel. Both are similar and equally stunning beaches, slightly more rugged than your typical European beach, featuring rocky cliffs and picture-perfect coves.

If your children are old enough to take on a small hike, Ponta de Piedade is a must-visit. Climb the golden cliffs as a family to be rewarded with stunning views or explore via kayak if your children are younger.

If you’ve worked up an appetite exploring Lagos’s famous coves, there are plenty of lunch options located nearby.  In the evening, you’ll definitely want to explore the Old Town. While it’s perhaps the most picturesque part of Lagos, it’s also a hub of restaurants, bars and cafes, and will likely be where you spend most of your evenings in Lagos.

Day 2

If you’ve spent the first day exploring the golden beaches of Lagos, you may want to spend your second day heading further afield. You’ll find an abundance of boat tours originating in Lagos, many of which are perfect for kids.

From dolphin watching to touring the Bengali caves, you’ll definitely be able to find a boat trip to keep kids of all ages entertained. Although it’s best to get this ticked off in the morning before temperatures get too hot. This will leave your afternoon free to enjoy some child-friendly water sports. Depending on their age, there are plenty of locations to try kayaking, surfing, paddleboarding and more. 

In the evening, why not seek out an authentic Portuguese restaurant in the Old Town and see what the local cuisine has to offer.

Day 3

The beauty of Lagos is that there are so many day trips within your radius. One town that’s definitely worth visiting is Carvoeiro, and this would be a great day to start day 3. If you’ve got the luxury of a rental car, this is the easiest and most affordable way to go from your accommodation to Carvoeiro. A taxi will cost around €50.

Carvoeiro itself is a charming old fishing village with a picturesque town centre full of outdoor breakfast or brunch spots. It’s also conveniently located 10 minutes from Slide and Splash Waterpark, where you can head to once you’ve fuelled up for the day ahead.

Final Thoughts

In truth, it’s impossible to explore Lagos in only 3 days, but it does work as the best base for a family holiday to the Algarve. If you do have more time on your hands, you may want to spend a few days in a different city or town. Tavira, Ferragudo and Vilamoura are all popular locations for families in the Algarve, but you should find family-friendly activities wherever you choose to visit!
