This is my go-to taco in a bag recipe when I’m looking for something quick, filling, and easy to make a meal or snack. If you want to make these on your next camping trip, I share a few helpful tips for prepping at home AND setting up a walking taco bar.
What is a walking taco you ask?
These aren’t actual tacos, but instead, are a single-serving bag of corn chips like Fritos or Doritos snack bags topped with taco meat and taco fixings; shredded cheese, beans, diced tomatoes, etc.
They are called walking tacos because everything is inside the bag making them easy to eat while you walk. They are also called by other names including Taco in a Bag, Traveling Taco, and in some Midwestern areas a Frito Pie or Frito Boat.
This convenient meal is great for busy people who need something filling to eat while they’re on the go. It’s hearty, healthy, and can be eaten at home, taken to work, or on your next camping trip.
What you’ll need to make walking tacos
There are a few ingredients that you need to make walking tacos. The basic list includes:
- ground beef
- taco seasoning
- corn chips (Fritos) or tortillas chips (Cool Ranch or Nacho Doritos)
- shredded cheese
Ideas Walking Taco Toppings
The recipe can be changed to suit the tastes of the individual eater; however, it is not necessary to add any additional toppings if you prefer your tacos simple. Here are a few topping ideas:
- sour cream
- guacamole
- diced tomatoes
- diced onions
- shredded lettuce
- chopped cilantro
- salsa
- sliced jalapenos
- beans (pinto or black are ones I like) for some extra protein
How to Make Walking Tacos?
- In a large skillet or pan, add taco seasoning and ground beef.
- Cook ground beef over medium heat until browned, about 6-8 minutes. Break meat apart as it cooks.
- Once cooked, drain excess grease. Use right away or store/freeze until later.
- When ready to serve, I like to set up a walking taco bar with single serve bags of Fritos, Doritos, or other corn chips, and all the toppings. That way everyone can create their own version with taco meat, shredded cheese, jalapenos, salsa, guacamole, etc.
- These can be eaten right out of the bag with a fork or with your fingers.
Great Camping Food
I love to serve up a taco in a bag when our family goes tent camping. I prep most things ahead at home and then reheat the meat on-site. It helps me reduce my cooking time while on-site and makes clean-up a breeze.
- Taco Meat – Precook the beef taco meat at home, cool, and transfer to a food-safe freezer bag. Freeze the bag flat for easy storage in the cooler. When you start packing your ice cooler, place the frozen taco meat at the bottom of the cooler to stay cold.
- Beans – Add beans to the mix for added protein. I will add the beans into my cooked taco meat or be reheated together on site. If you don’t want to do that, opt for canned pinto, black, or ranch beans.
- Vegetables – You can pre-chop your tomatoes, onions, and lettuce at home and store them in storage bags.
