Beyond the Beach Chair: 7 Adventures in the Bahamas That Will Get Your Teens Moving

Beach loungers and tropical drinks might be all adults need on a Bahamas vacation, but teens need more action to stay engaged.

It won’t be long until the “I’m bored” pops up, but lucky for you, this region offers far more than beaches and sunshine. You’ll find plenty of adventure activities to keep even the most restless teenagers entertained, so here are some ideas that your teens might enjoy.

1. Kayaking Through Mangrove Creeks

If your teens can’t fathom another beach day, but aren’t too keen on full-blown adventure sports, kayaking through the mangroves hits the sweet spot.

Places like Lucayan National Park in Grand Bahamas or the channels around Andros will give you that calm, glassy water where the whole family can enjoy a mini expedition. It’s going to feel wild, but it’s completely accessible, which is why this is such a popular highlight on the best cruises for families with teens. The turtles and birdlife are an added bonus.

2. Snorkeling or Diving at Thunderball Grotto

Thunderball Grotto is pretty magical, and it’s famous because two James Bond movies were filmed here.

It looks like a normal rocky island from the outside, but inside, there’s a network of underwater caves that are ideal for snorkeling and diving. It’s safe enough for beginners, but just as enjoyable for the more experienced.

3. Biking Through Nassau

If you head over to Nassau, you can easily rent a few bikes and take a tour through the city’s colorful, historic streets. Great for teens who don’t want to explore on foot.

There are plenty of routes to choose from and all of them are scenic, so take some time to pause to take it all in. There are also tons of photo opportunities and Instagram moments thanks to the bright murals, ocean views, and pastel stoops.

4. Swimming with Pigs at Major Bay Cay

This is one of those excursions that nobody will forget because how often do you get to swim with cute pigs in the ocean? Plus, if you’re with a guide, you will also get the chance to feed them.

Between swimming with the pigs and strolling alongside them on the beach, your teens will be busy for the entire day, so you’ll definitely have a few moments to pause and relax.

5. Ziplining In Freeport

For the more adventurous teens, ziplining is a hit. There are several adventure parks in the area that offer full canopy tours, complete with treetop platforms, rope bridges, and ziplines that move faster than you might think.

This is one of those activities where your teens will get that rush, but won’t feel unsafe or overwhelmed at any point, and you’ll more than likely want to join in, too.

6. Stand-Up Paddleboarding

This one is for the water-loving teens! Stand-up paddleboarding opportunities are available in multiple areas, and after a short intro from an instructor, your teens will be moving through the water with ease and probably a few laughs after coming off their boards.

And depending on where you choose to paddleboard, you will probably have the chance to explore a few hidden coves where marine life is abundant.

7. Exploring Blue Holes In Andros

No trip to the Bahamas is complete without visiting at least one of the blue holes, and Andros is where you will find the most.

These natural underwater sinkholes are almost otherworldly. Plus, you might need to take a short hike to reach them, which makes that first swim even more rewarding. Definitely add Captain Bill’s Blue Hole and Blue Holes National Park to your list.

When Beach Days Won’t Cut It…

Traveling to the Bahamas is about taking a real breather from life, but it helps to know that if you are venturing out there with teens, they’ll have more than enough activities to keep them busy. Better yet, plan out the activities with them. This way, you can be sure everyone’s having a good time.
