Woom Bikes For Kids

Woom bikes are 40% lighter than conventional kids’ bikes and seamlessly designed to give children the perfect introduction to riding a bike and spark a life-long passion for cycling. Their original line ranges from Woom1, a low-entry balance bike for toddlers to Woom6, a super lightweight 8-gear bicycle for older children 10 and up to ride into their teens.

Each level accommodates different heights, weights, and riding levels for your child. Starting with the balance bike at level one,  your child will be able to move on up the range as their confidence, ability, and riding skills become more developed.

Woom bicycles are constructed of high-quality aluminum material and are geometrically designed with agile and easy handling in mind. The design of the steering column provides better control and stability too.

In this review article, we will be looking closer at the Woom6 bike, a 26″ pedal bike that weighs 22.1 pounds and is designed for children 10 to 14 years old or 55″ to 66″ tall.

Woom 6 Bike Review

Let me just start with the obvious. The Woom 6 bicycle is truly a sight to behold. The design is clean and sleek with a gorgeous aerodynamic design. My son could not wait to jump on it and take off down the street!

In a market where manufacturers seem to be forever seeking new ways to make things cheaper but charge more for them, Woom seems intent on making a quality product. And this shows with how much more my son uses this bike than his last one. In his own words, “I just like how easy it is to grab it and go.”

When pressed for more than teenage boys usually share, he said the reason he uses it more is because of how, when compared with his older bike, it feels like he glides down the street and the lightweight design makes stooping and going so much easier.

I witnessed this firsthand when I went out riding with him. He has a thin, lightweight frame himself, compared to other boys his age, so I could always see the weight the bike brought to our rides. But he truly flies down the street with this bike with a kind of grace. A kid I could usually bicycle circles around can now keep up and, in some cases, even take the lead. It makes me want one for myself.

Lightweight Frame

But, what really started to set it apart for me was just how lightweight it was! Truth be told, I expected the lightweight frame to crumple in half the moment anyone sat on it. After all, it has been my experience that you trade lightweight for durability.

So when I felt how lightweight the whole thing was, I expected this review to go poorly. I was wrong. And I am glad I was. This bicycle is both incredibly lightweight and durable.

To illustrate this, I as a fully mature adult, who could probably stand to lose a little weight, put no noticeable strain on the frame at all. This is in spite of the bike being designed for youth.

Stability

Naturally, it wasn’t long until an awkward turn and a mishandling of the brake led to a fall for my son who, due to the lightweight nature and stability of the bike, was able to catch himself and prevent a nasty spill for the bike as well! Seriously, he’s been using this for two weeks and hasn’t actually dropped it or fallen once.

And he’s not the most able-bodied rider. I can’t say the same for his old bike.

Adjustable handlebars provide a more comfortable reach for the rider as he or she grows. The angle makes it suitable for light trail riding as well. The seat is also adjustable for height and tilt.

Woom6 gear shift

Shifting

In fact, there is little about this bike to not like. The few complaints I have are quite minor. For instance, the shifting mechanism, the turn knob style shifter, is actually quite intuitive. But it doesn’t turn as easily as I would like. It takes a hard crank of the wrist for me to downshift and my son could barely shift it at all in the beginning. This may take a little breaking in, but at the time of writing this it has gotten some good use over the last couple of weeks and it is still no easier for me to shift.

My son has gotten better at it than when we started. Perhaps it takes a little strength building of some finer-tuned wrist muscles to shift it as intended. Either way, that is my biggest complaint with the bike.

Woom helmet and accessories

Accessories

I received a Woom Bell, helmet, and air pump with our Woom 6. I like the design of the air pump. The helmet fits perfectly and my son found it to be quite comfortable. The quick-release mechanism made it easy to take the helmet on/off, but stayed firmly in place during use.

The only other complaint is more of an issue with one of the accessories. The bell does not seem to be designed with the particular shape of the handlebar it goes on. No stranger to assembling and repairing things, it seemed this bell fit a little awkwardly on the unit and even when tightened was still a little too easy to shift around.

Overall Thoughts

All in all, I think the bicycle is easily described in just a few short words. This bike is durable, lightweight, gracefully designed, and well-engineered. The pros greatly outnumber the cons, and those I have are only minor.

Overall, I would highly recommend this bike to anyone looking for a bike that is both lightweight and durable. The Woom 6 offers a great introduction to riding and will definitely spark in your child a life-long passion for cycling. It’s also just plain fun to ride!

This Woom6 sounds like a great option for older kids! The fact that it’s 40% lighter than conventional kids’ bikes is a huge plus. I remember struggling to lift my kid’s old bike. The 8 gears also seem awesome for different terrains. Have you tested it on really hilly areas? I’m curious how well it shifts gears. And I love that it can grow with the child as they gain confidence. Did your kid find it easy to adjust to?
