diy first aid kit for college

As college students prepare to return to campus, one of the most important things they need to do is to create a college dorm first aid kit. Having the right items for common ailments and injuries can make a big difference in how quickly a student can get back to their studies and everyday activities.

I am a parent who likes to provide their child with a safety net in case of an emergency situation. I’ve created hiking first-aid kits, mini-travel kits, and so on. So it makes sense that I’d make sure my daughter had the proper supplies for college.  Being healthy and staying healthy is key to having a successful college experience.

Let me share with you how to create your own homemade first-aid kits complete with free first aid printables and homeopathic products. The first is a packing checklist with what first aid consumables your kit should include and the second printable is a small “easy-to-use” reference guide to include inside the health kit for students.

As a BONUS – I have an exclusive 20% discount code for Boiron products to help you restock your first-aid kit!

Now, our family prefers to take homeopathic and natural remedies as well as preventative measures first when it comes to health, so I’ve tailored the kit to include homeopathic items. I am partnering with Boiron USA here because we have been using their products for years and trust their dedication to quality and safety. So it was natural to include their products in the kit because we use them all the time.

Homeopathic remedies from Boiron can provide relief for a variety of common ailments in convenient and easy-to-use forms. In this article, I will walk through creating a complete first aid kit that includes general health items and homeopathic remedies from Boiron.

Getting Your Child Ready to Return to College

Sending your child off to college is an exciting time, but it’s also important to make sure they have everything they need to stay healthy and safe. Even if the school has a student clinic or a 24-hour pharmacy adjacent to campus, it’s still important to equip your child with essential health items. There’s nothing worse than having minor symptoms in the middle of the night and not having any medicine to take! Having the necessary remedies on hand can help alleviate this worry.

Please note: I am not a medical professional! The information provided here is based on what our family members use and the items mentioned are what I sent with my daughter when she went to university. Consult your doctor before using any kind of medication. Always read and follow label directions.

Building a College First Aid Kit

When it comes to preparing for college, a dorm first aid kit should include all the essentials for occasional minor ailments and injuries that may arise during college life. But first, let’s talk about the box or container that will store these items. It’s important to choose a box or bag that is durable and easy to open in an emergency situation.

This is the metal box I used for my daughter’s kit

I chose a metal storage container because it was the look my daughter wanted for her dorm. It also had a label space if she wanted to include a first aid sign or label for easy identification.

Also great for this purpose are store-bought zippered medical bags, plastic bins like shoe boxes or a tackle box, or any other container with a sealable lid. Just make sure it has enough space to fit everything you need in your kit.

Once you have the container, gather your supplies.

Essential College Medicine Kit Supplies

These are the basic items I included in my college student’s dorm “medicine cabinet” kit.

  • allergy medicine
  • antiseptic wipes
  • bandages in various sizes
  • cold and flu medicine
  • cough relief
  • diarrhea remedy
  • first aid ointment or antibiotic cream
  • fever reducer
  • gas and heartburn relief
  • immune support (vitamin C, elderberry, etc.)
  • instant cold pack/compress
  • medical adhesive tape
  • pain reliever
  • scissors
  • sterile gauze
  • thermometer
  • tweezers to remove splinters or ticks

Storing small items in a bag like this helps keep them organized

I found it convenient on a storage box like this to place all the small items like tweezers, bandages, and antiseptic wipes in a storage bag. This one is silicone, but a plastic storage bag will do the trick too.

Finally, it is important to include any personal items that you may need such as an EpiPen, inhaler, etc. These items should be clearly marked so that your student can quickly identify them in an emergency. It is also important to check the expiration dates regularly and replace any expired items immediately.

Homeopathic Remedy First Aid Kit

Additionally, for a more comprehensive college first aid kit, you should also consider adding homeopathic remedies from Boiron. Boiron’s homeopathic medicines are a great addition to any college medicine kit, as they help provide relief for symptoms of common ailments such as colds and flu, muscle pain, and even allergies. But they also have remedies for relief of eye strain due to computer usage, sleeplessness due to mental exhaustion from studying for exams or working late at night, and relief of digestive issues from overeating junk food.

Boiron offers a variety of homeopathic medicines that you can include in your own first aid kit. Their single medicine tubes are small, convenient to carry, and designed to target specific symptoms, like Arnica Montana for muscle pain and bruises. While other medicines treat a combination of symptoms like Acidil for heartburn, bloating, and upset stomach.

These two, as well as Calendula cream (first aid salve) and Nux vomica (heartburn from overindulgence in food or drink), are the ones our entire family uses most often. We take them everywhere from road trips and family vacations to stocking them in our home first aid supplies.

I opted for these Boiron products that remedy common ailments. Each single medicine box includes 3 tubes (buy 2 get 1 free) with each tube containing 16 doses each. I’ll include just one tube of each medicine in the college medicine box.

Here is what I included for my daughter’s personal use. It’s also what Boiron recommends for the most common symptoms and complaints in young adults. This list of 16 single medicines treats specific symptoms, so when taken at the first sign of an ailment, you can reduce symptoms while also speeding recovery time.

Tips for Using Homeopathic Remedies

If you are new to using homeopathy,  here are some tips to get you started.

  1. Always read the label and dosage instructions before using any homeopathic remedy. All of the products above are to be taken orally, with the exceptions of Calendula Ointment or Cream and Arnicare Gel or Cream, which are applied topically (to the skin).
  2. These products are available over the counter and are HSA & FSA-eligible.
  3. The products I mentioned do not have any known drug, herb, or supplement interactions. But if you or your child has any concerns about their medical condition, they should check with a physician before using these remedies.
  4. These remedies are reliable and easy to use and can help your college student find relief for symptoms associated with minor or occasional health issues.
  5. These remedies may be taken by both adults and most children (always refer to Directions for Use on the label). Be sure to store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
