How to Make Grilled Potatoes in Foil
Start the process for your grilled baked potatoes off right by preheating your grill. To cook your potatoes evenly and to get the fluffiest insides, set the temperature to about 400 degrees and let it preheat. While the grill is preheating, you can prepare your potatoes.
Choose the Right Potatoes for Grilling
Potatoes are dense so it’s important to choose potatoes that are similar in size and shape as this helps them cook evenly. We’ll be using the grill like an oven and want to minimize losing heat.
To make grilled baked potatoes in foil, simply:
- Preheat your grill to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Cut a sheet of foil that is large enough to wrap around each potato individually.
- Wash your potatoes and dry them completely.
- Poke a few holes in each potato with a fork or knife.
- Rub each potato with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, and any other seasonings you like.
- Wrap the potatoes in foil, making sure they are completely covered.
- Grill for 30-45 minutes, or until the potatoes are cooked through.
- Remove from grill and let cool for a few minutes before unwrapping.

What to Do With Small Potatoes?
Don’t worry if you don’t have any large baking potatoes. Smaller potatoes can also be grilled. Wash and prepare them with oil and salt as you do for larger potatoes, then place them in a small grill basket. These will cook faster so watch your time closely.
Should You Poke Holes in Your Potatoes Before Baking?
Did your grandmother ever tell you to poke holes in baked potatoes so they don’t explode? It’s scientifically debatable whether or not the potatoes will actually explode, but poking holes will make your potatoes fluffier.
There is a lot of water in potatoes which turns to steam as you bake or grill them. This steam power is what cooks the inside of your potato and keeps those insides fluffy. However, if there’s too much steam the insides can change their texture.
It’s more likely the skin will split rather than the whole potatoes exploding, but who wants to risk it? Poke a few holes in the potato to help that steam release and to keep the potatoes cooking evenly.
What Temperature Should I Grill My Potatoes
I recommend grilling these potatoes at 400 degrees but you can experiment with temperatures anywhere between 350 and 400. The higher temperatures will give you crispier potato skins. Cooking them at the lower end of the range will make the insides even more tender, but the skins won’t be as crispy.

How Long Do You Grill a Baked Potato?
Keep the lid on your grill closed as much as possible while the potatoes are baking. Every time you open it, you will add extra cooking time. If you grill potatoes at 400 degrees, it will take about 30 minutes for them to cook through. Use a skewer to poke through the potato. If it enters easily, your potato is done. If not, bake it for a few more minutes. A larger potato will take longer to grill than a smaller potato.
Can You Bake Potatoes Without Boiling?
Baked potatoes are a delicious and versatile side dish, but they can take a while to cook. Boiling the potatoes before baking them can speed up the process, but it’s not necessary. In this recipe, I tell you to wrap the potatoes in foil. This essentially helps the potatoes to keep the heat in and to cook more quickly. Save yourself a step and use this easy method for baking potatoes in foil on the grill.
How Do You Store Leftover Grilled Potatoes?
Grilled potatoes are the perfect side dish for any summer barbecue, camping trip, or tailgate party. On the off chance you have leftovers – how do you store them? Grilled potatoes can be stored in the fridge for up to three days. Wrap them tightly in foil or plastic wrap to prevent them from drying out. When you’re ready to reheat them, leave them in the foil and warm them in your oven for about 10 minutes.
Grilled baked potatoes can also be frozen for up to three months. Place them in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag and pop them in the freezer. When you’re ready to eat them, thaw the grilled potatoes in the fridge overnight and then reheat them according to the instructions above.
Alternatively, you can slice them up and fry them with some bacon and eggs for a delicious breakfast.
All in all, grilled baked potatoes are a healthy and delicious side or main dish that can easily be customized to your preference. Whether you like them with just salt and pepper or loaded up with toppings, they’re sure to be a hit at your next barbecue. If potatoes are comfort food for you like they are for me, fire up the grill and give these grilled baked potatoes a try!
