Things to Do on Thanksgiving Day

This year, create new memories with your loved ones with some of these festive activities this holiday season. There is enough here to fill the big day from the time you wake up to watch the parade to when you’re trying to walk off that turkey coma or that second piece of pumpkin pie.

1. Play holiday-themed family feud

My whole family loves to watch and play Family Feud, and Thanksgiving is the perfect holiday to break out this game. To make it Thanksgiving themed, come up with survey questions about all things related to the holiday like “name a side dish served at Thanksgiving,” or “something you are thankful for.”

Shop fun Turkey-themed Family Feud Trivia on Etsy.

2. Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

One of the most beloved holiday traditions, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a must for many families. Get up early and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade together. Make it a tradition and have some breakfast while you enjoy all the gigantic character balloons, floats, and performers go by. You can even try to spot family and friends in the crowd!

Some easy breakfast ideas that feed a crowd are overnight oats, breakfast casserole, or a fruit and yogurt parfaits. Set everything out buffet style so people can help themselves and then settle in and watch the parade.

3. Make homemade thank you cards

A Thanksgiving themed craft is the perfect activity to do with kids of all ages. Gather some construction paper or card stock, crayons, markers, and any other art supplies you have on hand, and let everyone make their own homemade thank you cards. Older kids through adults can write inside them what you are thankful for this year. Younger children can draw pictures or glue on fall leaves. These make great keepsakes and can even be mailed to grandparents or other relatives.

4. Volunteer at a local community kitchen

For families who want to give back and teach their kids the importance of helping others, consider volunteering at a local soup kitchen. 7. Go to the movies

8. Host a movie marathon

If you’d rather not go out and would prefer to stay home, consider having a movie marathon. There are so many great Thanksgiving-themed movies out there, from family classics to newer releases. It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and  A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving are some of my personal favorites for younger children. For tweens and teens, try Miracle on 34th Street or Elf. For horror fans, there’s always Halloween.  And for adults, there are classics like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles or National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

You could even make it a Thanksgiving themed movie night and have popcorn with all the fixings; melted butter or caramel and chocolate drizzle. Try this recipe for S’mores Popcorn.

9.  Go on a nature walk or hike

One of the best things about this time of year is all the beautiful fall colors. Take a nature walk as a family, go hiking with the kids and look for different types of leaves. See who can find the most, or collect some to bring home and use for your Thanksgiving crafts later in the day. If you’re feeling more adventurous, go on a short hike and take in the scenery.
