35 of the Top Things to Do in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Oklahoma City isn’t a “fly over town” but a fantastic place to explore and discover unique attractions and lots of fun. It was named one of the TOP travel destinations (2020) by Travel and Leisure magazine. You’ll find an array of things to do in Oklahoma City that you’d never expect. But don’t take T&L’s word for it, take mine because I LIVE HERE!

This local travel guide is written by someone who loves to explore her backyard. You’ll find plenty to fill your vacation itinerary on your next visit.

I like to plan my trips by destination first, followed by activities, and then food. Here you’ll find the best in local outdoor recreation, the best museums, things to do near OKC with teens and kids, seasonal activities, events, and a few restaurants. 

This is a GREAT city to live in and to visit. I am proud to call OKC my hometown. I’ve been an OKC resident now for more than 20 years. I may not be a native Oklahoman, but I can say I’ve lived here more than anyplace else.

Whether you live near OKC and are looking for a few weekend getaways in Oklahoma, planning a road trip from someplace else, or just planning a visit to the area, I am excited to share some of my favorite places to see, stay, and eat at with you here in my hometown.

Outdoor Things to Do in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

1. Urban White Water Rafting at RIVERSPORT Adventure Park

If you are looking for an outdoor adventure, then you want to start here at RIVERSPORT OKC along the Oklahoma River. You can navigate white water rapids on the same site Olympic hopefuls train on, maneuver a white water kayak, or just float in an inner tube here.

Riversport OKC is one of only two inland whitewater courses in the country. Training guides help teams navigate the turns and rapids for a thrilling experience. If you aren’t quite as adventurous, there is tubing scheduled during certain times of the day.

On land, the adventure park offers more fun with an elevated adventure course, high-speed slides, a zip line, flat bike track, and indoor skiing.

On the river, you can experience some flatwater kayaking, SUP, and paddle boating around!

2. Paddleboard or Kayak in Stinchcomb Wildlife Preserve

Looking for something not quite as wild? Enjoy a flatwater paddle through Stinchomb Wildlife Refuge south of Lake Overholser. This is my favorite place to kayak and SUP in the city. Meander through reed lined tributaries, enjoy the quiet, and watch local wildlife. There are rentals options on-site through RIVERSPORT Adventure Park at Lake Overholser. 

3. Tour Downtown by Bicycle with Ride OKC

Downtown OKC and surrounding areas are walkable and totally bicycle-friendly. The city has done a fantastic job installing an interconnecting system of bike paths throughout the city. There are 16 trails with over 86 miles of trail. Be sure you pack your comfortable walking shoes when you visit!

You can rent a bike at a number of places and ride around or you can take a guided tour with local Ride OKC. I like touring with Ride OKC because you can get local guides who know the area, the history, and the best food stops. Owner Ryan is a local architect and has a wealth of knowledge (plus there are several downtown buildings he had worked on). We have taken media tours with them and can say that they are fantastic!

If you like cookies, definitely take the Cookie Tour that stops at 5 local restaurants all serving a killer chocolate chip cookie. Other tours Haunted Ghosts, Bikes & Brews, Art & Architecture, and custom tours can be booked on their website or via Viator.

Note: If you don’t want to take a guided tour, you can rent cruisers from Ride OKC for a few hours to a few days. Riding cruisers is an excellent way to explore the city in a relaxed, leisurely fashion while having some fun!

4. Be Entertained in Bricktown   

Bricktown entertainment district is a favorite with locals and tourists. This 10 block area is lined with restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. Grab a bite to eat, watch a movie at the Harkins Theater, play miniature golf at Brickopolis, take a horse-drawn carriage ride, listen to dueling pianos, or ride the Bricktown Water Taxi that runs from the Bricktown Canal.

Walking along the Bricktown canal is one the best free things to do in OKC with kids. There are plenty of benches and photo ops and the canal has lighting in the evening.

You can also check out events like the OKC Dodgers games, holiday events, and festivals throughout the year, or take a short walk to the downtown area. Plus with all of the nightlife options, it’s easy to make a night out of exploring.

Bricktown is the most popular destination with its restaurants, bars, shops, and entertainment venues like movie theaters. If you’re interested in honing your mixology skills, don’t miss out on exploring the vibrant nightlife. Consider checking out the thriving bar scene and, for those looking to take it a step further, enroll in the Oklahoma City Bartending School to master the art of crafting exceptional cocktails.

5. Watch the OKC Dodgers Play Ball

The Oklahoma City Dodgers, the AAA affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, call Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark home. It is located in the heart of Bricktown so you can come early, watch batting practice and then enjoy all that Bricktown has to offer after a game. 

The stadium offers family friendly seating with several sections where kids 14 and under can sit for free. With ticket prices ranging from $6-$19, it’s a great way to spend an evening with the family in Oklahoma City.

6. Take a Spin on the Wheeler Ferris Wheel

You know you can buy almost anything on eBay these days, even a ferris wheel. When the Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel was listed on the auction site, an Oklahoma businessman bought it and transported it to Wheeler Park.

Now the Wheeler Ferris Wheel, you can take a spin on this iconic wheel, play free lawn games in the Wheeler District park, or relax in one of the hammocks looking out over the Oklahoma River. The possibilities are endless in this lively area of the city!

7. Watch the Sunset Over Lake Hefner and Park

Lake Hefner in NW OKC offers a great opportunity for outdoor recreation. There are lake trails that you can walk, run or ride your bike alongside the lake. You can also rent a kayak or paddle board through RIVERSPORT OKC Lake Hefner on the south side of the lake near the marina. 

The golf course, play fields, and playgrounds offer more ways to enjoy this beautiful Oklahoma lake. On the east side of the lake there are a number of restaurants that provide scenic views of the water.

But perhaps the best way to experience Lake Hefner is to watch the sunset over the lake. This picture-perfect moment can be captured on one of the many outdoor patios that line up along the shoreline, or from the Lake Hefner Lighthouse near the lake’s restaurants on the east side of the lake.

8. Explore the Myriad Botanical Gardens

Escape into this urban oasis in the heart of the city. Stroll through this beautiful 17-acre downtown city park, let the kids play in the splash pads and children’s garden, let your dog off leash in the dog park, or visit the tropical Crystal Bridge Conservatory.

On Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings, find your zen with a free yoga class on the lawn. Other scheduled classes run throughout the week. During the summer months, bring a picnic dinner or a lawn chair to sit out on the lawn for free concerts and movies in the park.

9. Go Cruising Along the Mother Road – Route 66

This is the iconic road trip from Chicago to Santa Monica that weaves thru the city. Popular stops along the route are the Lake Overholser Bridge, Gold Dome and the Milk Bottle Grocery buildings on Classen Boulevard, and a former Texaco Station that is now the Pump Bar on North Walker.

Route 66 attractions near Oklahoma City to see include Pops 66 and Arcadia Barn in Arcadia, and the Rock Café in Chandler.

10. Visit the Most Instagrammed Spot in OKC

The Womb is an art complex founded by Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. It is one of the most infamous spots in the city and is now home to the OKC art collective Factory Obscura. Take your picture outside and head inside to see the new permanent immersive art installation called “Mix-Tape.”

Mix Tape is an immersive art experience that visitors can explore by walking through different interactive rooms and themes. Experience vibrant colors, shapes, music, projection mapping and much more as you make your way through the exhibit. It’s a great place for any road warrior looking to add a little culture to their travels. 

After exploring Factory Obscura, take time to explore the Automobile Alley District. This historic neighborhood is full of trendy restaurants and local shops.

11. Experience Local Street Art at the Plaza Walls

The Plaza District is one of my favorite places to visit in Oklahoma City. The local art scene is alive and well here too. Plaza Walls is a rotating mural project featuring local artists. Visitors can see murals in the alley behind the shops on this stretch of NW 16th and in the area. Stop into the indoor gallery with “Graff Roots”, an exhibit highlighting the city’s graffiti heritage.

The shopping here is fun and quirky. I love that you can find unique items and souvenirs to bring home. We picked up some handcrafted jewelry, a few t-shirts, and even a postcard of the city skyline – all terrific reminders of our trip!

The local restaurants here in the Plaza District are on point offering everything from tacos to ice cream. When friends come to town, my favorite place to take them is Mader Lao Kitchen, a Laotian restaurant owned by a James Beard award semifinalist. The food is incredible and the atmosphere is perfect for a night out with friends.

Top OKC Museums & Indoor Attractions

12. Smell the Flowers at the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory  

For those that love flowers and plants, a stroll through this 13,000-square-foot greenhouse at Myriad Gardens is a must-family activity. Recently renovated, the conservatory reopened in spring 2023. Visitors can explore the lush, tropical plants and flowers from around the world in this indoor paradise.

13. Stroll the Paseo Arts District

For those wanting to take in some of the local art vibe, a stroll through the Paseo District is in order. This district is home to over twenty galleries and studios featuring work from local artists. Visitors can enjoy murals, sculptures, paintings, photography, and more.

Annual events like the Paseo Arts Festival and First Friday Gallery Walk draw thousands of people to the district. There is also a variety of restaurants, shops, and outdoor cafes along the Paseo for visitors to explore.

14. Oklahoma City Museum of Art  

The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is a must-see destination for art lovers visiting the city. Home to a permanent collection of over 10,000 works, guests can explore everything from ancient European sculptures to modern American paintings. 

The museum houses one of the largest collections of Chihuly glass in the world including the  55’ tall glass tower in the Museum’s atrium to the Chihuly glass ceiling walkway, my favorite, located upstairs. 

Visitors can take in a film at OKCMOA’s world-class theater, or explore interactive activities for children. Families with tweens and younger children love the hands-on projects featured during Drop In Art Saturdays, free with paid admission.

15. Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum

The bombing of the Murrah Federal Building was a tragic day in Oklahoma City’s history. The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum stands as a reminder of the impact of violence on our community and all communities.

The museum features interactive exhibits, audiovisuals, and personal accounts that honor the memories of those affected by the bombing. This powerful memorial and museum is a must-see for anyone visiting OKC. Rated as one of the top museums in the country, this outdoor memorial and interactive museum are one of the most visited sites in the state.

The outdoor space, managed by the National Park Service, is free to walk around and features 168 empty chairs, each representing a life lost in the Oklahoma City bombing. The museum (paid admission) features interactive exhibits that tell the stories of survivors and first responders, as well as provide educational opportunities to reflect on the tragedy, loss, resilience, and hope. 

Guests are welcome to explore this memorial at their own pace. Admission is timed and reservations are highly recommended. You can book directly or through Viator.

16. Tour the Oklahoma State Capitol

The state capitol building has quite the art collection and the building itself is beautiful. Take a self-guided tour to view its Greco-Roman architecture and artwork. You can also call ahead to schedule a guided visit. From there, you can head down the street to learn more about Oklahoma at the Oklahoma History Center.

17. Thunder Up at the Paycom Center (Downtown OKC)

If basketball is your game, then come watch the Oklahoma City Thunder play. The city’s NBA team is one of the most fun teams to see in action. Tickets for home games can be purchased online or at the Paycom Center (formerly the Chesapeake Arena) box office.

Prior to home games, be sure to check out the thunder alley for music, drinks and food. Then stay after the game to join in on a fan celebration as thousands of Thunder fans pour onto Bricktown’s streets!

18. Cruise the City by Streetcar

Take a journey through the city’s downtown and surrounding areas by streetcar. You can hop on at any stop, or even download an app to view the streetcar route map and plan your journey. 

We like parking in a free lot and then hopping on the streetcar. It is a great way to see the city. If you are staying downtown, there are stops near most of the area’s hotels. 

Things to Do With Kids in OKC

19. Climb the Walls at Summit Climbing OKC or Threshold

I do literally mean “climb the walls”. The city is home to two premier climbing gyms that are great for kids of all agesl Summit OKC and Threshold Climbing.

Summit OKC is just south of downtown and allows you to climb their 90 foot tall converted grain silos in addition to their indoor space. I joke with my children that they are part monkey because they love to climb, always have. They love climbing gyms. 

Threshold Climbing in NW OKC offers Threshold Summit has over 20,000 square feet of climbing and bouldering surfaces, all with different levels of difficulty. 

20. Orr Family Farm

There’s no place like a farm where you can pet farm animals, go for a pony ride, play in the tractor tire sandbox, or take a tractor ride. Here at Orr Family Farm in SW OKC, you can have a full day of fun, food, seasonal events, and more kids activities in OKC’s favorite farm. 

If you want to enjoy the farm at night and go glamping, book one of their Conestoga Wagons or Teepees. We experienced Conestoga Covered Wagon camping at Orr Farm and you can read more about it. This is SOO MUCH FUN and we had the farm to ourselves.

21. Pretend You Have X-Ray Vision at the Museum of Osteology

The city has the only skeleton museum in the country. It’s not as creepy as you might think. At the Museum of Osteology, you can see skulls and skeletons ranging from small rodents and primates to a giraffe and whale. 

With over 300 specimens, this museum is the perfect place for kids who are curious about biology and anatomy. On select days, you can put on your sleuth hat for a Forensic Night. This fun event lets you explore the museum, learn about forensic science, and work with fictional crime evidence.

22. Go Wild at the Oklahoma City Zoo

Nominated as one of the top zoos in the United States several years in a row by USA Today 10Best,  the Oklahoma City Zoo offers more than 1,900 animals from 400 species and lots of fun-filled attractions. Explore unique exhibits, including The Cat Forest/Lion Overlook, Sanctuary Asia Exhibit, Great EscAPE, and Oklahoma Trails. 

Ride the carousel or catch a train ride through the zoo. For a unique experience, plan your visit to coincide with one of their animal enrichment sessions! Get an inside look at how zookeepers provide animals with puzzles and activities to keep them engaged.

The Oklahoma City Zoo is the perfect family activity, with a wide range of educational opportunities for all ages. For an extra special experience, book an animal encounter at the OKC Zoo and get up close to some of your favorite creatures, such as California sea lions, Galapagos Tortoises, Asian elephants, or Asian rhinos.

23. Get Curious at Science Museum of Oklahoma

When it comes to fun family activities in OKC, you can’t go wrong with the Science Museum. From the Exploration Space, where kids can explore science through interactive hands-on exhibits, to the Dome Theater, featuring incredible planetarium shows and a state-of-the-art 3D theater—there is something for everyone at this popular OKC attraction. 

The CurioCity (pronounced “curiosity”) exhibit is unlike anything else in the country and its guaranteed family fun. It’s where you’ll find my family most often, even as teenagers. It makes a great rainy day activity in OKC.

24. Six Flags Frontier City Theme Park

It’s a roller coaster enthusiast’s dream when you visit the Six Flags Frontier City Theme Park in OKC. Located in northeast OKC along I-35, this park offers exciting roller coasters and thrill rides like The Diamondback and Steel Lasso, as well as family-friendly attractions such as the Mystery River Log Flume, Tin Lizzy’s, and Quick Draw. 

The summer concert series is included in paid admission, so visitors can enjoy live entertainment in addition to the park. There’s also a variety of restaurants and shops to explore inside the park. 

25. Ever Dreamed of Being a Firefighter?

What child doesn’t dream of being a firefighter? At the  Oklahoma State Firefighter’s Museum and Memorial, families can view antique fire trucks, a tribute to fallen firefighters, and interactive exhibits that teach kids about fire safety. 

26. Hurricane Harbor OKC 

Oklahoma summers are HOT! What better way to cool down than a trip to the water park. Hurricane Harbor (formerly known as White Water Bay) is a huge park featuring water slides, raft rides, zero entry wave pool, children’s area, and more.

27. Step into the Wild West at National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum  

Oklahoma City was once a western cattle town along the Chisholm Trail. So a visit here isn’t complete without a visit to a museum celebrating the American West.

The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum (formerly the Cowboy Hall of Fame) offers an in-depth look frontier life, western art, famous cowboys of the American Rodeo, Native American cultures, and the animals that lived on the great plains. 

There are exhibits on Native American life, American Rodeo, Western movies, frontier life, antique firearms, and Western art. Children have their own interactive section here too called Liichokoshkomo’ (‘The’ Place to Play). They can don a pair of chaps and cowboy boots, try their hand at camp cooking, or saddle up and pretend they’re riding a horse.

28. Soar to New Heights at iFly Indoor SkyDiving

Not all adventures happen on the ground. Head to iFly for indoor skydiving. You will feel the wind rushing through your hair as you float on a column of high speed air. The experience is unlike anything you’ve ever tried AND you don’t have to jump out of a perfectly good airplane.

29. First Americans Museum (FAM)

The highly anticipated First American Museum opened its doors in September 2021. FAM tells the stories of the thirty-nine First American nations living in Oklahoma. Visitors can explore the history and culture of Indigenous people by engaging with art, artifacts, and interactive exhibits. 

The onsite restaurant, Thirty-nine, is a must try. The dishes are always fresh and flavorful, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We always look forward to eating there for lunch or weekend brunch. Try the Blue Corn pancakes!

30. I LOVE Waffle Champion

Everything is better served on a waffle, right? This is a local favorite brunch spots in OKC and is often packed on the weekends. 

31. Oklahoma Original  Onion Burger at Tucker’s Onion Burgers

Onion burgers date back to the Depression where onions were added to beef to stretch a food budget. Now it’s a delicious way to enjoy a burger. Here at Tucker’s order the Mother Tucker, a full pound burger loaded with fried onions, jalapenos, and cheese. Staff will tell you to “Shit Your Mouth” when you order one.

31. Slice of Pie at Pie Junkie

The Bird Dog Pie with Kentucky bourbon at this Plaza District institution is my favorite slice of pie. But there isn’t a slice here that you could ever go wrong with.

32. Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies at Elemental Coffee

This local coffee house serves a carefully crafted cup of joe. They actually put a lot of care and thought into everything they do. Food is locally sourced and they their cookies are a MUST!

33. Fassler Hall’s German Beer Garden Vibe

Come to this Midtown family-friedly spot for the house made sausages, pretzels, and a rotating menu of beer on tap (for the adults of course). Indoor/outdoor makes this a great place in great weather. Downtown stairs is Dust Bowl, a local bowling alley that many love visiting. I haven’t been yet.

34. Roxy’s Ice Cream

There are so many reasons why this popular local ice cream food truck turned into a brick and mortar business. Their house-made ice cream is great on a hot OKC day and their ice cream cookie sandwiches are even better. Locations in Classen Curve and Plaza District. 

Another recommendation is Scratch Kitchen and Cocktails with locations in the Paseo Arts District and in Norman. Friend and fellow OKC blogger Lisa Sharp at Green Oklahoma loves it and recommends it highly in the article above. I have been too and love anything off their grill as well as their craft cocktails. 

Annual OKC Events You Don’t Want to Miss

There is always something happening in Oklahoma City. Some of our favorite events include:

• Festival of the Arts (late April) – Juried art festival held in Bicentennial Park across from the Civic Center. Great food, entertainment,  and art exhibits.
• Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon (late April)
• Chuck Wagon Festival (Memorial Day Weekend) – Western themed entertainment, food, and family fun at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.
• Red Earth Festival (early June) – Award winning Native American festival with dancers, artists, and more.
• deadCENTER Film Festival (early June) – 4 day film festival
• H and 8th Night Market (summer) – Summer street fair held in Midtown with street vendors, live music, and food trucks
• Oklahoma Regatta Festival (early October) – 3 days of boat racing in the Boathouse District. Our favorite is the dragon boat races.
